Musty Basement Smell
The home that we are buying has a finished basement that is musty. Is there anything that can be done (there is a dehumidifier down there already) short of ripping everything out and starting from scratch? Like would it even pay to rip out the carpets?

Re: Musty Basement Smell
Did you have the house inspected? Was there any mold? The house we are buying also had a musty odor in the basement. When we had it inspected, they found mold in the basement. We made the sellers bring in a mold company and have the basement treated and completely ripped up. We were planning on redoing the basement after we moved in so having them pay for the treatment and gutting of it was better for us.

Re: Musty Basement Smell
This is part of the reason I don't think I will ever buy a house with a basement if given the opportunity again.
I feel like basements in general have a smell to them.
Ours even moreso because we are close to the water.
After Sandy, DH ripped out everything wood-related and then repainted all the brick. It's helped a little bit but it will still always be damp and musty down there.

It probably needs a bigger dehumidifier.

Musty Basement Smell
I'd get rid of the carpets ASAP! Never understood why someone would put carpeting in basement...

Yes get rid of carpeting and check for mold !! We did that and had professional dehumidifiers from EMS Restoration and I can say our basement does not smell no funk at all.

Re: Musty Basement Smell
My husband plans to install an air circulation system when we finish our basement. We don't have any water issues, but I think a room that doesn't' get wonderful airflow, like a basement, can get stagnant smelling. The systems basically push the basement air out and pull the air from the rest of the house into the basement.

when i did research on this, there were lots of negative reviews. mainly around heating/cooling efficiency. even though those systems don't cost a lot to run on electric, you will be wasting a lot of heating/AC by the air circulation system. just my two cents.
