My 15 month old has NO words
He babbles a lot, and says mama dada but not necessarily directed at us.
I keep getting told by my mom and other relatives/friends to just be patient...that two of my brothers were very late talkers and doing great now...
I just wonder when he'll say something. I try very hard, but he's a VERY active kid that never sits down. He gets frustrated if you try to restrain him. I am exhausted from all the activity.
Some reassurance would be great...I guess that is what i'm looking for, lol.
I did make a call for early intervention just to put my mind at ease.

Re: My 15 month old has NO words
my sister didn't really talk till 2 years old. She'd point and grunt....
they thought she was disabled....she was just a late bloomer!
Keep talking to him all day long....it's magic once they do it. I came home from having DS, and DD was talking 2-3 word sentences!

Re: My 15 month old has NO words
I'm sure he's just taking his time with it. Don't worry, he'll surprise you one of these days! He's just a late bloomer.

Thanks for that
I am not one to get upset, but I was crying yesterday thinking about it...I hated placing the call to early intervention, he just makes no effort to repeat words or sounds etc...he has zero interest and his friends his age are saying things for the most part.

Re: My 15 month old has NO words
The funny this is that he walked before 10 months. He concentrates all his efforts into physical things...books and verbal stuff, no interest.
My mom told me I was talking at 10 months (words only and sentences at a year). My MIL can't remember when DH talked, but she can't remember much of anything, lol!

Re: My 15 month old has NO words
I am in a similar boat....DD is almost 15 months and only says dada and makes the sound of a snake. She learned a few signs though...she makes the sign for milk and help. At this point, I am not too concerned. If she doesn't have more words by 18 months, I'll look into an EI evaluation.
I think you just need to wait it out a bit more. Don't panic!

Re: My 15 month old has NO words
My son is 2 in about 2 weeks and his vocabulary mostly consists of: Pasta No Mummy Car Daddy Car No Mummy No Daddy No Mummy Car No Daddy Car Roary...the car Roary...a car No Pasta Juice Down Down (meaning up) No Down No Down (meaning NO UP)
and thats about all...I have no doubt he can say more, but he is so bloody stubborn, I think he just doesn't want to say more!!! eta...he does babble incessantly and talk and sing to himself constantly, he says many babble words that I recognise over and over again, so they obviously mean something to him.
Give him more time, IMO boys are notoriously later talkers than girls.

Re: My 15 month old has NO words
Awww.. he will talk when he is ready. My DS is 23 months and not talking yet. We had him evaluated and he did not qualify for services, but every child is different. 15 months is still young. Don't beat yourself up about it, when he is ready to, he will be talking up a storm! There are a lot of children that don't speak until after 2 years of age.

But what is funny is that my pediatrician thought the early intervention was a good idea...
And the few friends I have in my area told me 15 months is definitely not too early..this is prob all fueling my upset.
I just love this little boy more than anything and a few things are concerning me lately...he's also been sick for a few weeks, not helping things.
I can handle whatever is thrown at me, I just want to know all is ok with him. I guess as parents thats all we ever want!

Re: My 15 month old has NO words
i'm a speech therapist, and i did one of my internships in EI. usually around 18 months is when you start to see the "word explosion" and when kids start to pick up words, and repeat more words that you say... so your son is still a little bit before that. especially boys tend to be just a little bit slower with it. does he immitate any sounds? like animal sounds, "beep beep" "uh oh". thats a good place to start, because they immitate sounds before they immitate words. how bout understanding you? can he understand simple things you tell him to do? like ' get the ball?" that kind of stuff? i think it might be a little earlly for EI, but i definitely think its worth it just to ease your mind a little bit. good luck!!

No, he does not imitate sounds. Well...only a few little weird things, lol. If i sing in a high pitched voice he tries to sing back, its cute. But he does not say uh oh or beep beep...
I will breathe a little and relax. I appreciate your advice!
Edited to add....sometimes he will do things i ask...if i say get the ball, he will look for it...but not all the time will he actually get it. If I say "who wants milk?" he'll get excited and walk into the kitchen. But if he is playing with a toy, and i ask him if i can have it, he ignores me...he tunes me out all the time, only answers to his name a small amount of the time...things like that...

Re: My 15 month old has NO words
my nephew is 18m old now, and just recently really started talking. He would only do the babbling and ma, pa thing for awhile.
In my family it seems like boys are a little slower at the talking thing. My sis two boys took awhile and my sil boy took a while, my sis girl was talking quickly and did sentences around one.

Re: My 15 month old has NO words
My boys say a few words but mostly babble away.
My sister is very involved in EI and she told me that in actuality that many pediatricians will admit that they do not know developmental stages as well as they should.
Just as an example, we went to our 15 month appt last month and the ped told us they should be drawing with crayons by now and we had never actually given them a crayon. So i get home and take out the crayons and start coloring in front of them. Well they just held one in their hand and then a few minutes later started fighting over it so Jack bit the head off into his mouth. Thank god i was there to wipe it out before he choked. When i told my sister she said that is ridiculous and that most kids should not be given crayons till at least 18 months.
My sister comes over and evaluates them all the time for me and she said while they are later in many catagories, they are doing just fine. So i would not worry too much about it.

I agree with this 1000%
My son always knew how to express himself and get his point across but wasn't a BIG talker. he would babble, spoke many words, but not full sentences until after he was 2. Now at 3, he does NOT shut up! lol All he does it talk and forms an opinion about something lol
Meanwhile, my 16 month old daughter talks up a storm!
Don't drive yourself nuts!

Re: My 15 month old has NO words
Thank you everyone!! Your words and stories really do help, and have put my mind at ease....
Now I can focus on more important things, such as reading about Jamie Lynn Spears and wondering which digital frame to buy my mom

your welcome! i would start with trying to get him to immitate animal sounds, or any other kind of sounds like that "whoa!" "uh oh" "beep beep" "weee!".. all those kinds of things. like i said, being able to immitate those kinds of things leads to immitating real words... thats totally normal at his age to ignore you while hes playing with toys. but it sounds like he is understanding a some. try looking at picture books with him and doig thigs like " wheres the cow?" or " wheres the shoes?", those kinds of things to see if he can point to what you're asking him. and really just talking about everything hes doing while hes doing it is great, so that he can hear the words for what hes doing like "ooh! red car!" while hes playing with a red car, or while you're getting him dressed say things like " shirt on!" or " sock off!"... you'll feel silly doing it, but it REALLY helps them to hear words for things that are going on right then... keep the sentences short so he doesn't have so many words to "sort through". good luck!

Bella didn't say too much until 18 mts. I did speech undergrad and was concened (I'm a teacher too) and drove the speech teachers in my school crazy with questions and worry. She is now talking so much I can't believe it! She will be 2 in Feb. I wouldn't worry!

DS is 15 months and does not say anything either but mama, dada and baba.
He has said words at times that sound like up and car, but nothing is ever consistent so I don't count them!

Re: My 15 month old has NO words
I was worried for a long time too. we had EI evaluation but DD did not qualify because she was advanced in her receptive speech.
Then at 18 months, she started saying the word SOCKS. Then a week later, it's DADDY. Then a week later she started saying and signing the word BALL. Then a week later, PO PO (apple), and now MO (elmo). You worry and you wait, and you worry and wait some more and then it seems to happen so quickly!! Don't worry!

Re: My 15 month old has NO words
Connor doesn't say anything either except for Mama and Dada. He just points and grunts or grunt like sound at EVERYTHING. He can tell you a whole story without saying a word! I'm a little concerned too since Caiden was saying a bunch of words by now when he was Connor's age. But, I'm being patient because with Caiden I couldn't wait for him to talk, and now he won't shut up!
