My 4 month old just keeps spitting up ALL THE TIME
He is EBF and always spits up. It can be right after a feeding, 1 hour later, or 2 hours later. It doesn't matter if he ate from the breast or bottle. It can be 6-8 times between feedings.
I don't know what to do. The positive is that it doesn't seem to hurt him. He smiles & laughs after he spits up. He is gaining weight and sttn.
What is this? What do I do? I am so scared to start cereals

As long as he is gaining weight, is happy, and is sleeping through, then I would just accept that he is a "pukey baby" and keep a bib on him and a washcloth nearby.

Keep him elevated for one hour after each feeding. Did you try that?

Re: My 4 month old just keeps spitting up ALL THE TIME
My DS did the same thing and talked to the dr. about it after he spit up all over a friend's new carpet. I thought it wasn't a problem since he was gaining weight. Ped. said that it is a form of acid reflux and to put cereal in his bottles to help make the formula thicker and stay in his tummy better. Not sure if this is different for babies that are EBF.

You could try cutting dairy out of your diet...

Refux? My LO had silent reflux, no spitting but that is less common. Most babies with reflux are pukers.

Re: My 4 month old just keeps spitting up ALL THE TIME
I am thinking reflux too. It could be due to a dairy allergy. My DD is almost 5 months and is on a hypoallergenic formula (Alimentum) and rice cereal. The cereal helps a bit.

Re: My 4 month old just keeps spitting up ALL THE TIME
My little guys spits up alot too. He isn't uncomfortable from it and is gaining weight perfectly fine so I'm not concerned about it at all. I was worried about it in the beginning, but my Dr. reassured me that it is not something to be concerned about at all. Its a laundry problem not a medical problem. I think alot of doctors and parents are too quick to jump on the reflux bandwagon and medicate or change formulas when it is not really necessary. I'm pretty sure that all spit up is referred to as reflux but it is not GERD unless the baby is in pain or not gaining weight.

i could have written this myself, except that i am not BFing.
I have a ped. appt. tomorrow and I am going to ask again, so I will share with you what the doctor says. I inquired about this last time (a month ago) and he said there was no need to switch formulas and as long as it is not appearing to give her pain (it is not, she never cries and doesn't seem to be bothered at all by it) and she is gaining weight well. he was like,"babies spit up. their digestive systems are still developing."

Re: My 4 month old just keeps spitting up ALL THE TIME
My DS has reflux and he does this all the time. Sometimes its just small amounts after a feeding, sometimes its the whole bottle. He never seems phased by it and he just smiles and laughs afterwards.
As long as he's gaining weight, I wouldnt worry.

Re: My 4 month old just keeps spitting up ALL THE TIME
Hey Kelly,
Emma does or has been doing this since Day 1, I just switched her to Soy and Rice in her bottle and what a world of difference, not a bit of spit up this evening. I know that you EBF but the Soy works for us!

Yep-my son had a dairy allergy and he had reflux he was not a "happy spitter" which is what your son seems to be. I tried to eliminate dairy and he still was refluxing and miserable. Then he was miserable on Nutramigen. He is now on Amino Acid Formula and still allergic to dairy(breaks out in hives if anyone kisses him after eating cheese, etc.

babies spit up for a variety of reasons, the most common being swallowing too much air along with their bm or formula. The air gets trapped in with the liquid. The air has to come up, and when it does, so does some of the liquid.
try to make sure he's getting as little air as possible.
reflux seems to be the new catch all . no offense to anyone who is legitimately dealing with this but i would make sure and rule out everything else before reflux. plus if he's not exhibiting any uncomfortable behavior i doubt it's reflux.
babies spit up it's one of the things the do really well.
good luck
ETA
Here's a link to some info that may help.
I respectfully disagree-some babies spit up but not as the OP said-6-8 times between feedings. A very young baby with an immature stomach flap, maybe but not consistently.
To the OP-you can get his diaper checked for blood in his stool too, that will tell you if he has a dairy allergy

Re: My 4 month old just keeps spitting up ALL THE TIME
DS was the same way. He had reflux. He was constantly spitting up even hours after a feeding. He wore bibs 24/7 b/c he often covered both of us in spit up. Have you spoken to your pediatrician about reflux? If DC doesn't seem to be bothered by it, you may not need medication. Babies tend to outgrow reflux by 1 year and some get significantly better once they start solids. DS outgrew his reflux by 7-7.5 months.
