My belated labor story
I haven't had much of a chance to post...my mom came to Virginia to help me out this week which was great...just been busy!!
Here is my labor story:
After having gone into premature labor at 35 weeks and then having it stop on its own, I was SURE i would deliver early. I walked around 100% effaced with his head "right there" as the doctors said, and 1-2 cm dilated for the last 4 weeks of pregnancy.
Well 9/5, my due date, came and went. I was finally scheduled to be induced...the only day they could do it was 9/11! I was upset at first..i didn't want his birthday associated with the awful tragedy of 9/11...however i started to feel more and more like it was ok..my husband and I thought "well we'll forever have a reason to smile on that day if he comes on 9/11" which he did.
I was started on cervadil, a gel, at 8am...20 mins later i started contracting. Nothing too major but definitely there. By 1pm the pain was getting worse, maiinly in my back. At this point i was given a painkiller through my IV which took the edge off, but contractions picked up big time thanks to the pitocin they started at the same time. By 3 pm i was 3cm's and in need of a epidural. My back labor was pretty bad and making me nauseous and i knew i couldn't take hours of it. SOOO the epidural was administered..I was nervous to get it but it didn't hurt badly at all..just a sting in the beginning but then when it started worked...WOW is all i can say. I was able to sleep through contractions as they picked up..
By 7pm my contractions were strong but i was stuck at 3cm still. The doctor told me that if by 9pm i didn't move to 4 cm he was going to do a c-section because my pitocin was on full blast for hours and he said the baby could start to not tolerate it well after hours...
At 9pm, the doctor checks me...i am NINE centimeters and the head is literally right there..he had me feel his head which i resisted at first but then was glad i did..i coudln't believe how fast it was now happening!!! At 9:44 i was 10cm, started pushing and at 9:51 and 5 pushes later John James was born!!
I didn't feel a THING thanks to the epidural but was able to sort of feel the sensation as to where to push. One minute my eyes were closed pushing, and then i open them and my baby is being put on my chest...it was incredible.
In the end i had a fantastic experience even though i a) didn't want to be induced and b) had reservations about 9/11. But it happened the way it was supposed to, and i am so grateful for the end result.
