My birth control and vacation almost killed me.
So, a few weeks ago I posted about leg pain. Went for a doppler to rule out blood clots and it was clear. Dr said I probably just hurt my leg.
The pain in my leg continued to get worse until we went to the ER Christmas night. They took another doppler and it was also clear. They decided to send me for a cat scan of my lungs just in case.
And guess what - I have blood clots in my lungs - pulmonary embolisms. I just got out of the hospital, 7 days later. I was hooked up to heart and respitory monitors, the whole deal. I had to get 12 injections in my stomach (I look like I've been beat up badly, huge bruises) and am now on blood thinners for the next 3-6 months with weekly blood draws and tests.
Doctors said that my birth control plus driving to Miami in late November gave me the clots. I am very lucky they did not transfer to my brain. I would have been braindead or just dead if that happened.
Word of warning to anyone on BC - be very very aware of the look and feel of your legs. I knew something wasn't right when I had a red spot on my leg and had pain.

Holy cow!! How scary!!
My doctor wouldnt even renew my BC pills a few years ago, said he didnt like to give them to woman over 40 because of the chance of blot clots and such!
I am glad that you are ok now!!

OMG. I was thinking about you and saw you never updated. I am SOOOO glad you followed your gut. How long did you sit in your car without stretching your legs, etc?
Thank you for sharing this and I am so glad you are ok. Have all the clots dissolved?
Another ?, hope you don't mind. Do you smoke? I know they say risk of clots increases if you smoke.

We drove to Miami, stopped every 2 hours and walked around, food, bathroom, etc. We did stretch while in the car, too. Going there was about 19 hours and coming home was 24. I knew that was a long time in the car but since we stoped every 2 hours like clockwork I didnt think anything of it. I mean there are truckdrivers who drive for days straight and people on planes for 24 hours all the time. To me that shows what big an effect the BC pills are.
They say the clots will take 3-6 months to dissolve. They wont even bother taking another cat scan until the 3 month mark.
I am NOT a smoker which makes it very scary. I can't imagine the risk percentage for someone on bc who does smoke.

That is REALLY scary. I'm so glad you are ok.
I'm currently back on BCP, and I'm not happy about it. But, I didn't want to have my tubes tied after I had DS--just in case we want to have one more child down the line.
Ugh...I don't know what to do. I know that being on BCP is such a risk

so glad you took care of this.
This happened to my brother and the outcome was not so good. The docs and hospital missed it completely and the doppler was clear.
You are very lucky.

Wow, I'm really sorry you went through all this and I'm so glad you're better!
I've never had good reactions to BC so I haven't been on them since my 20's. Now I'm almost 40 and I'm too scared! I think it's time for DH to get the old snip snip

I'm glad you git to the hospital in time! Anytime I had to be on bc I was always a nervous wreck about clots!

I was on OrthoCyclen but I think this is a risk with any hormonal birth control.

I was on OrthoCyclen but I think this is a risk with any hormonal birth control.
thanks. And I agree about the bc. I had side effects with it too and had to use other methods.

Glad you are ok! What is frightening is that I have 2 girls that were in my vet school class who both got clots in their legs that progressed to Pulmonary thromboembolisms. Both of them were young, on birth control w/ no history of travel, and both were active runners! I stopped taking BC after the 2nd one got diagnosed. Too risky.

My old co-worker had a stroke at 24 years old. Her doctor said it was a side effect that most people (ob/gyns included) don't take into account when prescribing the pill.

So sorry to hear about this but glad you are okay.
I also had a deep vein thrombosis several years ago (blood clot in leg.)
I had to get bloodwork from a hematologist and they deduced BC pills were to blame. I was on Yasmin. I have literally never smoked a single cigarette in my life and there was no substantial inactivity beforehand.
I needed four months of coumadin. You will have to get your blood checked frequently. Lots of trips to Labcorp or Quest.
You will be fine.
