My birth experience
Hi everyone. I've been trying to figure out the best way to tell my story while remaining positive and not scaring everyone! So, here is my best shot:
On Thursday morning, June 21st, my water broke in bed at 3:45 am. I jumped out of bed and immediately knew what it was b/c it felt like I was peeing myself and that is how everyone had always described it to me. I called the Dr. and since I didn't have any contractions yet she said to just labor at home for a bit and to call her at 7:00 am. Right after I got off the phone contractions started and they were pretty intense right off the bat. I was confused b/c I always thought they started at like 20 min apart and got closer and closer together, but mine were 2-3 min apart consistently from the beginning. I was shaking so hard b/c I was really scared and knew that labor was not far away. I took a shower and after I dried my hair I called my Dr. and DH and I headed into the hospital.
I was 5cm when I got checked! Everyone was really surprised and I was happy I would be staying. I asked for an epidural and had one within 45 minutes. The epidural itself was a breeze, although I had an electrical shock go down my right leg which didn't hurt but was a bit surprising.
I was happy from 6am-8am and then all hell broke loose. My Dr. started me on Pitocin and increased it rapidly. I was in so much pain despite the epidural and had tears just streaming down my face. The nurse turned down the pitocin and I was able to relax a bit. They told me there was a bolus (sp?) that I could press to give myself more epidural and I was pretty psyched about that, but soon after I pressed it the first time I started to get a really weird sensation at the base of my neck...it was almost like a pinched nerve....well, to make a long story short that pain got unbearable REALLY quickly. They called the Dr's up and NOBODY could figure out why I was in such pain...I told them I knew it was the epidural b/c it was directly related to everytime I pressed that button to get more medicine.
The pain was SO bad...the worst I have ever felt in my life. I could not move my head to the side or up and down (I basically couldn't move at all) or I was in EXCRUTIATING pain. I could not even lay down flat and the nurses had to prop my head up with several pillows. The best part was they didn't even have heating pads available b/c they aren't allowed for some reason.
Anyway, I quickly dilated to 10 cm (the baby's head was still pretty high though) and they wanted me to push....they said I was pushing well but I couldn't even concentrate on it b/c of my neck pain. They wanted me to relax so I literally rested for 3 hours while fully dialated. Everytime they asked me to push I just couldn't...I physically could not move without feeling like I was dying. We discussed all the options...I asked for other drug options...even asked to stop the epidural....but any other drugs would have gone to the baby and they were afraid to stop the epidural b/c I was too far along and I was already talking about a c-section.
At 3:00 I had had it. I wanted to die - literally...the pain was so unbearable. My DH was freaking out b/c nobody knew what to do and nobody could help me. I requested a c-section b/c I just needed the pain to stop. The Dr's obliged and they wheeled me in for surgery which was SO painful b/c they wanted me to lay down flat and I COULD NOT do it....so just picture me being wheeled down the halls of this hospital with my arms in the air holding myself from laying flat...while screaming and crying out things like, "this is insane", "someone please help me", etc...
I had to mentally talk to myself to lay down flat for the c-section. I was crying hysterically but the Dr's moved fast. The c-section itself was no day in the park either...the pressure was unbelievable, but Madison Rose was born at 5:01 pm and weighed 7 lbs exactly and was 20 inches. She just looks just like Daddy and has SO much dark hair. She is really beautiful and we are lucky to have her. I have attached some pics.
After the c-section I found out that Madison was sunny-side-up and never descended fully into my pelvis, so even if I had been able to push I probably would not have been able to get her out vaginally and would have ended up with a c-section anyway. That makes me feel good b/c I was really dealing with guilt over my pain presiding over the kind of birth experience I wanted.
I am glad I had the 4 days in the hospital to recover b/c breastfeeding has been the HARDEST thing I have ever done. It is so difficult I can't even believe it. Our first night home with her (last night) was crazy...she didn't sleep at all and finally at 4:00 am I caved and gave her formula and she finallly slept. We are seeing the Pediatrician today and I'm going to discuss formula feeding b/c breastfeeding is really wearing me down physically and emotionally.
This baby stuff is serious business! I will update you all when things get better and after I have recovered. I probably won't be on much for awhile.
Thanks for all your fm's and support

They "think" it was a muscle spasm of some sort due to the epidural....but nobody really knows. It was really scary but I'm just thankful I had no residual effects from it b/c the entire time I was thinking "what if I have permanent damage?"....

Re: My birth experience
1st of all CONGRATS!! 2nd, epidurals indeed can pinch a nerve, debilitate a muscle and it can wreak havoc (temporarily mostly), I'm so sorry that your birth experience was so horrible, but I am sure Madison will make up for it in the years of happiness she will bring to you and your husband. Welcome Madison

Re: My birth experience
Congrats on your beautiful baby girl!!
I've been having breastfeeding issues too. It's definitely much harder and more time consuming than anyone ever told me. I'm trying to hang in there (my dd will be 3 weeks on Thursday) and give her formula only at night to get her through the night feedings. During the day she seems to not be as hungry as she is at night. So far it's working b/c the nights have been okay.
Good luck and congrats again!!
