My birth story- June 28th, 2007
What a great thread...posting my birth story brought back so many good memories of my peanut's birth
So on Wed June 27th at around 7:10 pm, I started to get contraction that were around 15 min apart for the hour and then they got closer and by 9:30 PM they were around 4-7 min apart and painful, where it was hard to walk. I had been having contraction irregularly all week but this was def different (everyone said you will know when you are in labor and they are right), we left for the hospital soon after and during the 25 min it took to get their, the contractions were around 4 min apart consistently and getting stronger and faster.
So I get admitted and one of the doctor comes to check me and he says, oh so and so (the doctor from my monday appt) told me you were going to come this morning, so I told him that I ended up not feeling right about just inducing him if the baby wasn’t ready and that I was here that night b/c he had coincidentally decided to come on his own now. I didn’t think he really believed me but he checked me out and says with surprised, yes your now 5 CM (I was 3 on mon) and 100% effaced and my water bag was bulging but he didn’t want to break it till I had the antibiotics in me for 4 hours (unless it went on its own), I was so happy to finally be in active labor! So the doctor asks if I want the epidural now, but truthfully it wasn’t that bad yet and I was breathing through the contractions. So he said walk around a little and then I can get it and they will start the poticin to make my contractions stronger and closer together.
Before I went walking they had to hook up the IV for fluids and antibiotics (I was strep B+). Well they couldn’t get the needle into my vein! After 4 tries and 3 nurses and me in tears and my DH ready to murder them all, they finally got it in. Everyone told me the antiobiotics for the strep B hurts, but it was fine and I barely noticed it going through the IV.
So I finally get the epidural b/t 11:30PM and 12Am, which also wasn’t that bad (the worst part is the needles they use to numb you), my anastheologist was awesome and talked me through the whole thing, I also have slight scoliosis and she warned me that the epidural is going to go to my left side more (it follows the curve of the spine) and she would do her best to even it out.For the next 3 ½ hours my labor wasn’t that bad, the epidural made me very loopy the first hour and I was able to rest a little and talk with my DH and mom and step-dad. At one point I started feeling the contractions only on my right side, so I had to get more of the epidural to even it out. I also started asking where my doctor was b/c I hadn’t been checked since 10:30PM and they told me he was sleeping LOL, I guess he figured they would get him when I was ready and he needed to rest. At around 3:30- 4:00 AM the baby’s heart rate dropped, so I got nervous and pressed the call button but the nurses were already monitoring it from their station and came running in, they tried to get me into different positions but it wouldn’t go up (it had been dropping and going up over the past couple hours when I shifted positions). So one of the nurses asked when the last time the doctor saw me and I said when I was admitted like 5 hours ago, so she checks me and I am 10 CM dilated so she runs to get the doctor and thank god when he walked in the baby’s heart rate returned to normal and the doctor checked me and told me that I was almost ready but to wait another hour or two or so b/c he wanted the baby’s head to descend a little more. Finally, its time and they tell me to push like I am having a bowel movement well pushing is a lot harder then it looks, and I still was numb from the epidural, but after like 10 min, I hear the doctor say theirs the head but I guess he couldn’t come through so they had to give me an episiotomy and also cut inside my vagina to make way for him and before i knew it my beautiful boy, was born at 5:53 AM after only 15 min of pushing and weighing in a 7 lbs and 21 inches long. All together my labor was around 10 hours, including the laboring at home.
So me and the baby are doing great, he looks just like me (although there is a little of my DH in there) and he is such a pleasure. I can’t believe we made this little guy and he is the sweetest thing in the whole world, we are so enamored by him. He latched on right away so breast feeding has been pretty good. I was lucky b/c the lactation consultants really liked me so they came every day to visit and make sure things were going good b/c although he was latching on from day one, it wasn’t correctly in the beginning so he really bruised me. He is also a great sleeper and will sleep for like 3-4 hours straight if we don’t wake him for feedings. My DH is the most amazing person, b/c of the vaginal cuts and episiotomy, I have many stitches in my vajayjay and butt area and it has been so painful to sit, stand, walk, etc. the doctor wouldn’t even tell me how many stitches I had b/c it was so many. And my DH has been the biggest help doing everything for me and is so in love with our son, and is so willing to help out with changing’s, sponge bathing, etc.
