My child doesn't eat in her chair

At the moment, DH is feeding her pieces of pizza standing in the kitchen.

When we feed her in her highchair, everything ends up going overboard to the dog. When I give up and feed her as she's walking about the room, she eats and comes back for more.

Any tips to break this habit? She's 13 months.

Re: My child doesn't eat in her chair

We had the same situation. I would not feed DD anywhere BUT the highchair, so as soon as she started throwing the food over, we told her no (a few times), and if she continued to do it, we took the food away. After a few weeks, she would hold the food over the edge and say "no no no", look at me and then drop it. Eventually, she stopped. She learned. It's just a phase. I think it's much worse to feed a child OUT of the highchair because 1) they won't learn that throwing the food over is wrong, 2) having a child standing up and eating with a dog in the room not only develops a bad habit but can also be dangerous, 3) the child may not learn to eat independently. So, I say stick with it and in a few weeks the throwing will probably be better. Your dog may gain some weight though!
My 2 cents.

My suggestion is to get a little table and chairs set. I see nothing wrong with a child who grazes, and so long as she's eating, why not?

I agree completely, we have a little chair in our living room and some nights he takes his own dinner and brings it to the coffee table and puts his chair right underneath. I agree with Rachel, as long as she is eating, its all good! I am very hesitant with disciplining my son with anything to do with food as he isn't a great eater and I am very careful about causing any food issues. As long as he is eating, I don't care where or how. The eating is the important part.

We had a rule in our house that the only place to eat was in the kitchen. I'm not a big fan of following around my kids & cleaning up their crumbs all over. I don't have the time for it.

I know it sounds silly but with our kids, just saying "that's the rule." or "I don't like it either but that's the rule." helped with about almost everything. I don't think they thought we made the rule - just that everyone had to follow it. That was enough to take the fight out of it.

Also at just over a year, if you don't want her eating & walking around the house, don't feed her unless she sits down.

Will she sit in a booster seat at the table with you?
