My child's school does not take them to wash hands before lunch
DS is in 1st grade. Since there is a stomach virus going around, I told DS to make sure he washes his hands well at school. He told me that they don't wash their hands or get hand sanitizer. His schedule is recess and then lunch right after. They do not go back to their classroom or stop by restrooms before eating lunch.
This is totally not sanitary, right? Would you say something?
I don't want to be THAT mom but this really bothers me, especially when there are so many viruses going around.

Re: My child's school does not take them to wash hands before lunch
i am not sure that DD's K class does this either. I have to ask her.
I actually prefer hand sanitizer because i know that DD won't wash her hands well enough or long enough to kill anything. But with straight alcohol at least I know we stand a chance.

My child's school does not take them to wash hands before lunch
I would be surprised if any school gets all the kids to wash their hands between recess and lunch. We have hand sanitizers on the walls in the cafe and all the bathrooms so they kids use that (I hope). You can ask to have hand santizers put up.

My child's school does not take them to wash hands before lunch
I never thought about it. Kids are dirty. Even if she washed her hands she'd get dirty waiting in the line to get her food, touching the walls etc. They touch each other, cough, etc. They aren't naturally clean creatures in Kindergarten. I never bothered to think about it. Things went around and ran their course. AJ's always been fairly strong and never out very long so I guess I'm lucky. But I wouldn't really blame hand washing before lunch on the issue. It's not just eating when they can pick something up, ya know?
That said by 1st and now 2nd grade she loves hand sanitizer so I let her keep some in her backpack. I doubt she uses it regularly. Only because it would be empty by now. I know she used to wash her hands better in 1st grade than 2nd because I've watched her at restaurants and had to correct her time spent soaping up. Can't imagine we were any better as kids.
What I can suggest is that your kid has to use the bathroom before lunch or after they get their meal. They won't stop a kid who has to pee. So get up go to the bathroom (its a good time) and wash your hands. AJ had to start doing this because she was doing it at the end of lunch and was late back to class so we made her start doing it at the beginning of lunch. Double win since it meant her hands got washed too.
But like I said. Lunch in itself isn't going to be the only source of a tummy bug.

Especially when they are probably sharing each others food and drinking each others drinks. They can have sterile hands, but I have seen how kids operate!

While it would be ideal, it's not feasible.
I would give your child a little bottle of hand sanitizer to use.

Like pps said, the germs are going to go around regardless but what about putting a wet one single in his lunch box so he can do a quick clean up right before he eats. I'm sure even if they go to the bathroom to wash their hands they'll touch all kinds if germy things by the time they get out of the bathroom lol

This is the norm. Gross, but I pack alcohol based wipes in the lunch box!

Well, dirty hands and then touching food then putting in your mouth is the MAIN cause of illness, so washing your hands before eating is typically pretty helpful!

Like others have said, they are 5 and can't keep their hands off anything. So even if they wash them before they eat their lunch, chances are they will have touched 50 surfaces before they even reach the lunch table. That is what kids do. Chances are the lunch table and seats are also dirty. There is no winning in social environments at this age.

Maybe, maybe not! All I know is I have packed my DD with an alcohol wipe EVERY single day since she started K, and she is very rarely sick. Meanwhile kids in her class drop like flies when an illness is going around. I don't know why anyone wouldn't want to put a little effort into trying to avoid illness, but eh...whatever floats your boat! ;)

Just to play devil's advocate though, I don't pack a wipe or hand sanitzer and DD is never sick either. Something is always going around, kids are always out sick and she is never sick. I really believe you immune system is luck of the draw. DD was formula fed and never sick. And yet you hear how breastfeeding passes on so much immunity. If I had breastfed her I would totally think her strong immunity was from that. But in reality, it would have been the same if I hadn't.
I never give her elderberry or probiotics either, and if i did, I would swear she was never sick because of taking those.
I know people who are always washing hands, using hand sanitizer and are sick constantly. I am a slob and never sick, or sick rarely. I really think a LOT is owed to immune system and that is pretty much genetic.
Now I am not saying you should be licking subway poles or sharing your water bottle with anyone, but I think that when it really comes down to it, if you're going to get sick, you are going to get sick.

Eh, kids are going to get sick. Its just not realistic to have every kid wash their hands before lunch. I just chalk it up to one of those, it is what it is things and not give it a second thought. I wouldnt call the school about it.

Re: My child's school does not take them to wash hands before lunch
It's a daycare regulation in NY but once they go to K I don't believe there are any regulations pertaining to hand washing. My dd class does not was their hands before lunch. There are 27 kids it would take forever for them to all wash their hands. I send wipes into school with my dd but most times they go unused. She also has a hand sanitizer in her back pack which she never uses. I don't think there is any real way to prevent it.

Same with my 5 year old. It drives me crazy that they do not wash hands. It's very basic hygiene. I was sending sanitizer but the kid doesn't use it

What kind of wipes are you using and how do you pack it? I have been sending sanitizer but a wipe makes more sense.

Individually packaged wipes made by Purell. They are just alcohol, not that benzo whatever stuff in some of the other brands. I can't seem to find them at any store locally other than Harmon. I know they have them on Amazon though.
