My child's school does not take them to wash hands before lunch
Wow. My kid was: Bottlefed Full day Daycare sent Tubes in the ears Never sent wipes to school Sanitizer only at end of 1st and sometimes now in 2nd (she keeps losing it)
Other than H1N1 that one time she's only ever missed school one single day for sick. H1N1 only lost her 1 day of school as well. She doesn't get sick enough to stay home. Stomach stuff, flu, colds, god knows what else goes around. Guess like they said lucky roll of the immunity dice? Because according to the general news I've broken ALL the rules.
Meh.. Life goes on.. But I did give some suggestions like she asked

But like I said. Lunch in itself isn't going to be the only source of a tummy bug.
Well, dirty hands and then touching food then putting in your mouth is the MAIN cause of illness, so washing your hands before eating is typically pretty helpful!
Like others have said, they are 5 and can't keep their hands off anything. So even if they wash them before they eat their lunch, chances are they will have touched 50 surfaces before they even reach the lunch table. That is what kids do. Chances are the lunch table and seats are also dirty. There is no winning in social environments at this age.
Maybe, maybe not! All I know is I have packed my DD with an alcohol wipe EVERY single day since she started K, and she is very rarely sick. Meanwhile kids in her class drop like flies when an illness is going around. I don't know why anyone wouldn't want to put a little effort into trying to avoid illness, but eh...whatever floats your boat! ;)
What kind of wipes are you using and how do you pack it? I have been sending sanitizer but a wipe makes more sense.
Individually packaged wipes made by Purell. They are just alcohol, not that benzo whatever stuff in some of the other brands. I can't seem to find them at any store locally other than Harmon. I know they have them on Amazon though.
Thanks! I will stop by Harmon

Just to play devil's advocate though, I don't pack a wipe or hand sanitzer and DD is never sick either. Something is always going around, kids are always out sick and she is never sick. I really believe you immune system is luck of the draw. DD was formula fed and never sick. And yet you hear how breastfeeding passes on so much immunity. If I had breastfed her I would totally think her strong immunity was from that. But in reality, it would have been the same if I hadn't.
I never give her elderberry or probiotics either, and if i did, I would swear she was never sick because of taking those.
I know people who are always washing hands, using hand sanitizer and are sick constantly. I am a slob and never sick, or sick rarely. I really think a LOT is owed to immune system and that is pretty much genetic.
Now I am not saying you should be licking subway poles or sharing your water bottle with anyone, but I think that when it really comes down to it, if you're going to get sick, you are going to get sick.
Same here.
ETA - DS doesn't wash his hands before lunch either.

You need to eat a little dirt in life and I truly believe that the reason kids get sick is because we all are told to be more "clean". (I am a clean person but don't go crazy with things like this).

Eh...I will tell you, I used to be sick ALL the time! A cold a month! I wasn't very diligent about washing my hands like I am now. I've definitely stepped it up in the past couple years and notice a HUGE difference. HUGE! To each their own though. I will never believe that handwashing is overrated
My 17 year old is NEVER sick, he also never washes his hands at school, but they also aren't sharing things like they do in elementary school though.

My child's school does not take them to wash hands before lunch
While not the most sanitary, it is unrealistic to think that the school would be able to bring all the kids in from recess, bring them back to the classroom, have each child wash their hands, and then return to the cafeteria for lunch. My son gets 20-something minutes for lunch. There really is no time.

They would probably lose a kid on the way to the bathroom or something anyways! LOL j/k

Why don't YOU just tell YOUR kid to wash his hands? That way the problem is solved!

Oh I HATE my hands being even a little dirty so I am always cleaning them but no one else in my family does the same (which grosses me out lol). I think you share a lot of things everywhere not just elementary school.

Yes, this is what I would do actually! Just tell the aides he needs to use the bathroom and go wash them. Or just send in the wipes.

Clearly the "mommy" in "jacksmommy" should give it away (and before you ask, yes, one of my children is in an elementary school)
But, its not my issue. I am personally not afraid of dirt....but I have hoped that I have instilled good manners in my child and that they use it (again it is my hope - and as a teacher - I do see that that is not always the case).

I figured you were. The point is we can teach our kids and tell them what they should do but that doesn't mean they will. I have a tween and teen lol

Lunch is 25 minutes at our school. It would take my Kindergartener almost 10 to go wash hands. Plus I think the teacher would get annoyed if I made a standing request that my child go wash hands. I think the wipes probably makes a lot more sense, but my kids don't do either at school and rarely get sick. If they got more than a cold or two a winter is likely step up the hand washing game by sending wipes in the lunchbox.

Re: My child's school does not take them to wash hands before lunch
I'm sorry, that's pretty unrealistic to have all kids wash their hands before lunch. If you're really concerned I would get some sort of non-chemical wipe. I wouldn't suggest sanitizer because that can't be good to get in your mouth.
I teach my daughter general good hygiene and I think that's all you can really do.

Re: My child's school does not take them to wash hands before lunch
Although I have to say I'm not surprised, I agree it's very unsanitary to have recess where kids' hands are getting filthy & then lunch right after without any kind of hand washing. They should give out wet paper towels & put hand sanitizer on at least. As a parent I'd suggest it, that's all you can do, and send your own child in with hand sanitizer or tell him to ask the teacher if he can wash his hands before he eats. I think that's all you can do, I don't think they're required to make the kids wash their hands.

My child's school does not take them to wash hands before lunch
Unfortunately, there just isn't enough time in the school day to make sure every child washes their hands before snack and lunch. I would just send antibacterial gel or wipes in your child's lunchbox, or have him ask to use the bathroom before eating so he can wash his hands.

I would cry if I had to take 32 kids to the bathroom while 7 other classes tried to do the same.
I have a sink in my room but again, 32 kids w would take 10 minutes, at least!

Re: My child's school does not take them to wash hands before lunch
I am in NJ - our schools have tons of wipes they give out in the lunchroom for all the kids. I have been a lunch side at a few schools and we never bring kids to wash their hands beforehand. It just doesn't seem possible - lunch time can be chaotic ! The kids are allowed to Fo to bathroom if they want but wipes have been at all the schools

In K the lunch aide handed out wipes on way back from recess. Not sure what goes on this year. I send my daughter with her own regardless

My child's school does not take them to wash hands before lunch
My sons K teacher hands them all wipes when they get to the cafeteria. I think that's a good idea and all the parents donated wipes so that's one of the things she uses them for. If she didn't do this and it was important to me I would put a packaged hand wipe inside his lunch box.

Re: My child's school does not take them to wash hands before lunch
I put 2 wet one wipes in my sons lunchbox for him to clean up his hands. He uses them bc he's obsessed with his hands being clean prior to eating (I instilled in him very young). I also have hand sanitizer on his bag & school has it.
It's unrealistic to have that many kids wash prior to lunch.
