My DH was just in a car accident - with question

He just called, he is fine! Chat Icon

His car was hit on the front passenger side. Someone pulled out of a parking lot right into his car.

Now for my parenting related question---
Should I get rid of the carseat that is in the back seat, passenger side?

yes. I was in a car accident and my pediatrician told me I needed a new one since you never know if something was knocked loose, or anything else. Rather be safe than sorry but your insurance company will cover it if you have the right coverage.

I'd replace it.

Your insurance company may cover it.

If someone hit him I would add the carseat to the claim.

I just went out and bought a new carseat and faxed the receipt over to the insurance company.

They may try to get you to send them your original receipt for the car seat in the car. My seat was like 2 years old so I didn't have the receipt. I convinced them that it didn't matter what I payed, rather what I have to pay to replace the damaged one.

As long as its same like/kind quality.. it should be fine. You can't go buy a Britax if you had a graco type thing cause they're your PROFITTING from the accident.

I agree tho.. get ins to cover it if they will.

Re: My DH was just in a car accident - with question

Thanks for the links. Here is the criteria to meet for not needing a new carseat:

1.You were able to drive your car away from the scene of the crash.

2.The vehicle door closest to the child safety seat was not damaged.

3.There were no injuries to any of the occupants of your vehicle.

4.The vehicle's air bags did not deploy.

5.There is no visible damage to the car safety seat itself.

The only one we don't meet is #1 and thats because there was damage to the front rim and tire was deflated. So I think we are OK.

Glad that DH was ok! I think you are safe in that you don't have to replace it. It's really up to you, you can ask your insurance if they'd cover it anyway. My car was parking in my driveway when it was hit Chat Icon and they were fine.

Re: My DH was just in a car accident - with question

since its the other persons fault i would have them replace the seat. i was hit on my passengers side going 5 miles per hour and had both car seats replaced. they do ask for the damaged seat. i ended up getting a bigger one for my son so it worked out in our favor.
