My dog is having paw problems..
Im taking him to the vet in a little while, but I wanted to know if anyone else had this problem. He is constantly splitting his nails and bleeding He limps because he licks his paws raw (im guessing because they hurt) and then goes outside and it happens all over again
He does have hypothyroidism and is on meds for it, I wonder if that has anything to do with it?
It almost looks like his nail is comming out of his paw I feel so bad

Re: My dog is having paw problems..
Not sure if this is the reason but be sure to be careful for salt when walking your dog. If you have to walk your dog over salt, make sure you rinse his paws when you get home. The salt is so bad for their paws.

Re: My dog is having paw problems..
My dogs pads were all dry and his nails were splitting. not to the point of bleeding but they were splitting. My trainer told us to get Mushers. It's like a cream for dogs pads. You rub a little into his paws and on his nails every night. And it works. I use it in the winter. My trainer said just like we get dry skin in the winter, so do our dogs.

This was my immediate thought. Hope he gets well soon

Re: My dog is having paw problems..
Well, I took him and they ended up having to cut his naill off. Well, pretty much anyway. Now he's limping around the house with a big bandage and a cone on his head
Poor thing.. they didnt say what it was from but it wasnt from the hypothyroidism. They see it more during the colder months though.. hopefully he'll be back to normal soon

I had the same issue. I had to buy cream for the pads & now she's much better. GL!

Re: My dog is having paw problems..
licking the feet is a classic allergy symptom. it could be in addititon to the thyroid problems you could try swithing her to a hypoallergenic food( most allergies are food related) however you"d have to be patient it can take up to 3 months to get results and also weekly oatmeal baths, and fishoil/vit E supplements are great. the veterinary dermatologist i work with always recomends that as the first step. fm me if you have anyquestions

Re: My dog is having paw problems..
My golden retriever has a licking ocd. First it was her legs and paws and we thought it was allergies but then she started to lick everything, floor, couches toys. She still does it constantly and we have to stop her becasue she will start licking and give herself licking granuloma's. We ruled out allergies because the allergy meds ceased to work and she started licking everything.
