My dog STILL wont eat for me!

So here is the deal. We have fed him IAMS since we first got him (over a year now). Everyday for breakfast and dinner he would run to his bowl excited to eat.. then one day (about a month ago) he just stopped. He no longer wanted to eat. He will pass by the dish and not even care that there is food in it. I have tried taking the dish away to show him who is boss and he just doesnt care or even notice!

He spends alot of time at my parents house (aka doggy day care lol) and when they would feed him he would eat.. then slowly he stopped eating there too.

However, like any dog he begs non stop for table food. He used to get a treat here or there but since he stopped eating I wont give him one. I feel mean but Its very frustrating to deal with lately. Yesterday he went the entire day without eating. Finally I broke down and went to the store and got some canned IAMS and he gobbled it right up!

Here is my question. Should I take him to the vet? Could something be wrong and this is his way of telling me? or do you think he is being spiteful? I am pregnant and as silly as it sounds, I know he can tell.. he acts very jealous and protective lately. Maybe this has something to do with it? Also recently we got rid of one of our cats I was highly allergic to.. however I am pretty sure his eating stopped before that.

Thanks for any help!!

ETA: He also swims alot. He loves to jump in my parents pool. He swallows alot of water and I try to keep him out but of course he jumps in whenever he can. Wondering if maybe this is hurting his stomach?

so, you never changed his food or anything?? he just randomly stopped eating his normal everyday food?

the fact that he gobbled up canned IAMS that you bought, i would think there isnt anything wrong with him... i went through this same thing with my dog about about 6 months go... we swtiched his food to adult formula & he started doing the same thing your dog did... BUT hershey would eventually eat his food.... he wouldnt run to is and gobble it up, but if we left it out for him before we left for work, it would be gone when we got home so we knew he was eating it

im assuming you feed him dry food usually.... try adding a little bit of water to the dry food... also, try crubbling up a treat on top of the food and see if he likes it that way

Re: My dog STILL wont eat for me!

try mixing dry and canned food cause if he will eat the canned then maybe he will eat the dry when it is mixed in.

And if he's hungry he will eat at some point so I would just leave the food.

Yes I have only been feeding him dry. He has been fine with that up until now. I did mix about 1/4 of the can with the dry food and he ate it last night.

i would say stick to mixing it with wet food, OR add a little water to the plain dry food... worked like a charm with our dog!

Re: My dog STILL wont eat for me!

My parents dog won't eat dry food, but she needs to lose weight so the vet said rather than mixing in canned to add chicken broth to the dry.

Re: My dog STILL wont eat for me!

Maybe he just doesn't care for the taste of the dry IAMS anymore.
With loads of other dry food on the market, why not try a different one until he finds the one he likes?
The water could definitely be bothering his stomach. If he's swallowing that much... he has to be stopped from going in the pool or he could get bloat or something even worse. It probably makes him feel full too.
My Vito loves Wellness dry food... maybe give that a shot.
Good luck!

I will try. I didnt want to change his food unless I knew that was the case so I actually borrowed some food from my parents and my neighbors (all different kinds) and he wasn't into those either. But he is loving the canned food so for now I guess I will mix it in until I can find a dry food he will also like. HOPEFULLY!

Thanks!

Re: My dog STILL wont eat for me!

I added a little apple and carrots and she eats her food now. She usually leaves a couple of the dry food pieces, but other than that, she eats.

There are days that she eats like she's never eaten before and there are days that it seems she eats just to survive.

good luck.
