My first grader has no snack..is that normal??
We lived in West Islip last year, where DD attended Kindergarten. We recently moved to Northport. I got the welcome letter home in her back pack today and it said that since lunch is at 10:30 a.m., they will not have snack.
The school day is from 8:05-2:25. That seems crazy to me. Is this the norm in some districts? Should I write a note? If so, what should I say???
DD is a terrible eater as it is. If she doesn't eat for long periods, she gets head aches and sometimes throws up.

very odd. If we have an early lunch in our schedule, then we have snack in the afternoon.

Us, too.
Honestly, you may want to get a doctor's note stating that she has to eat a small snack at some time in the afternoon.

that's crazy....first of all that's way too early for lunch, but that's besides the point. THey should be having snack in teh afternoon....I would def express my concern to the teacher...ask if it's school policy

Ditto. We usually have the first lunch (10:30) and have an afternoon snack. If we had the last lunch (12:30), we would do an am snack. If we had the middlelunch (11:15) then we didn't have snack since it was right in the middle of the day. For an early lunch like that, they should be having an afternoon snack.

Re: My first grader has no snack..is that normal??
wow! I give my 5th graders snack! Haha we don't have lunch until 12:50, so even I am hungry and we have a working snack for like 7 minutes around 10ish
Is it the school rule, grade, or just teacher's rule?

Doesn't sound right to me. There should be an afternoon snack if lunch is that early. 1st grade is too young not to have a snack IMHO. Hopefully, if you talk to the teacher, she will change things. It may be a new lunchtime for grade level for her and she may not realize it's needed.

Re: My first grader has no snack..is that normal??
It may be school policy. I'd inquire. My school is grades 3 to 5 (nyc) so we don't have the little, little ones but the first period lunch is at 10:15 and we don't have any snacks after that cuz we are not allowed food in our classrooms.

Re: My first grader has no snack..is that normal??
My fifth graders had snack everyday. 10:30 lunch would mean afternoon snack while a one o'clock lunch would mean afternoon snack.

I would write a letter. It may not be her choice she may have been told by the principal.
Personally i think at the very least kindergarteners and 1 st graders should have snack. I teach 1 st grade in queens and in the past we had snack, but in the last 2 years our principal has said we can only have it the first half of the year and itnhad to be amworking snack (yea likemam1st grader is going to eat and work). Its not right they are so little and get hungry.

Re: My first grader has no snack..is that normal??
Hi Ava's mommy, this is Kayla's aunt! Small world! Kayla and the rest of the K-kid cuties do get a snack this year.
I am a teacher as well, although I teach middle school, and I think that it is important for her to have something later in the day. Kids that young are so exhausted, mentally and physically, that they need something.
I would understand if it were mandated that it be a healthy snack, but no snack? That is too much.
Kayla misses Ava! How is she adjusting to her new school?
