If they had been watched I'm sure it wouldnt have happened...
I don't necessarily think that is true....it takes a SPLIT second for something like that to happen.
I agree. The damage would have been done before there would have been time to react. Unless the child was doing something to provoke the dog that could have been prevented.....
It's all just an awful case....

I agree...bottom line dogs are animals and they have animal instincts....I treat my dog like a person but when push comes to shove, she IS a dog.

What an awful story, I'm so sorry to hear this!
That's why I told DH we can't have a dog before we have children. They do get jealous when a new baby comes home.

Re: My friends dog attacked their baby..just a note to be aware
That is awful!! That poor baby.
I'm freaking out right now because my SIL is watching our 8 1/2 month old Saturday ALL day (we have 2 weddings that day). She has a weimeramer (sp?) and sometime he nips at me, but not hard. I'm so nervous that he is going to be a little too curious. They've been together before and it was okay, but after reading this, I"m so scared. There isn't anyone else that could watch her. We'll just have to call every hour to check up!!

Re: My friends dog attacked their baby..just a note to be aware
That's absolutely horrible. This is a good PSA that dogs should never be allowed loose around loose young children!
I am an absolute animal lover - without a doubt - but I also think sometimes the best thing would be to put an animal to sleep with peace and dignity. This is one of those times.
Not only would few people be unwilling to adopt the dog (including me, who will never have children), but the dog is now a liability. The fact that he did it once means that people are on notice that he's capable of doing that. Should he do it again, especially if he did it to a child not belonging to the owner, the owner would face enormous liability. No one should be asked to take on that responsibility, not should anyone think it's okay to take on that responsibility.
It's a tragic situation. I don't think it would be a bad idea to put the dog to sleep at all. There are far worse fates for animals than that.
ETA - in case people do not see my post below. I am not saying that this is the only possible correct solution. I'm saying it's ONE solution. I understand not everyone agrees. I'm not trying to stir the pot. I just wanted to say that the couple shouldn't feel as if they are horrible people if their ultimate deicsion is to put the dog down. That's all. I wasn't trying to bring unnecessary drama to a tragic post!

I'm sorry you are freaking out, I didn't mean to cause that!! The truth is that most dogs wouldn't do what that dog did....and if they are supervised it is less likely to happen....please don't freak...I would just make sure as in any situation that they are being watched if they are together. That's all. So many families have babies and dogs and this would never happen, I would call it a freak accident i guess...

You are right, and I do understand what you are saying...but for my friend and her husband...well they cried themselves crazy last night over the thought of the dog being put to sleep. I would too.
We just wish we knew what happened to make the dog attack. No one will ever know, and it stinks to question it.

ME, TOO!!! How could you not?! I'm sorry if I made it sound like "c'mon this is the EASY decision!" I know it's not. We do love our pets as we love people and it's never, ever easy to let them go, especially in such an unfortunate situation.
I'm so sorry they are going through this. I understand that they must be absolutely devastated. I am glad I don't have to make this call... and I that everyone gets through it okay.

I respect that fact that everyone does not share my opinions. I'm not going to argue them. I'm just pointing out that sometimes euthanasia is not the wrong decision in my opinion. People are free to disagree.
From a legal standpoint, though, it would be a terrible idea to pass this dog on to anyone else. Unfortunately, litigious parents and judges don't necessarily understand that the dog didn't mean it in the same way we do.
I CERTAINLY don't expect everyone to agree with me, nor do I think that there is only one correct solution. I'm just grateful I do not have to make this call.

My DH was attacked by a dog when he was a baby. I wouldn't trust any animal near a small child.

I also agree with Stephanie. And, the baby didn't even have to be provoking the dog. He could have just put his hand out for the dog, or went to "pet" the dog and starteled him. So, even if you're in the room all it takes is one little touch.
Anyway, I'm so sorry for your friend and her family. Her sister must feel AWFUL
I hope the baby recovers quickly and with little to no permenant damage

I agree with Stephanie, too. I don't see this as a situation where the parents are to blame. To the contrary, it sounds like they reacted quickly and hopefully prevented even further injury.
for everyone involved!

Re: My friends dog attacked their baby..just a note to be aware
IMHO it is irresponsible and unfair for ALL involved - The child, the dog, and the adults to allow a dog and a small child to be close enough to each other for an accident like this to happen - I CRINGE any time I see someone put a baby on the floor with their dog -
Children are children - they pull, hit, get excited and yell - they can do many thigns to startle and upset an animal - as children, they don't know any better, it's innocent - you can't reason with an 11 month old baby -
A DOG is an animal. - No matter how kind, patient, lovable or WELL TRAINED it may be, it is STILL an animal with animal instincts - dogs can and will react - again, like the child, not knowing any better - it's not the animal's fault
That is why it is the RESPONSIBILITY of adult pet owners to keep their small children a safe distance from their pets -

My 2 cents....I live in a house with 4 dogs and a 4 month old. The dogs are NEVER close enough to that baby do ever do any harm in the smallest measure. If they want to approach him, they can, but with DH or & on the leash and the other holding the baby just barely within reach.
That the baby is OK, and that the dog can be re-homed rather than euthanised
