That is so terrible. I'm so sorry. I really hope that dog finds a good home.
I think any person, family or not, who adopts/buys an dog/cat or almost any pet runs the risk of that animal attacking. They are animals after all. Now most of the time it doesn't happen. But when it does, it is a reminder. They are animals first and our pets second.

That is awful!! That poor baby.
I'm freaking out right now because my SIL is watching our 8 1/2 month old Saturday ALL day (we have 2 weddings that day). She has a weimeramer (sp?) and sometime he nips at me, but not hard. I'm so nervous that he is going to be a little too curious. They've been together before and it was okay, but after reading this, I"m so scared. There isn't anyone else that could watch her. We'll just have to call every hour to check up!!
I would ask your SIL if she wouldn't mind keeping the dog away from the kids. Either put him in the yard if it's nice out, or confine the dog to on room. If she won't do it, then ask that she be in the room with the baby and the dog and never leave them alone. I don't think that's a lot to ask since it's only one day.

That the baby is OK, and that the dog can be re-homed rather than euthanised
Ditto.
I just can't even think about it...how traumatizing for the baby and the parents. I feel terrible that this happened to them, and that they have to deal with not only the tragedy that their beloved dog did this to their child, who is now in the hospital with serious injuries, but that they also have to get rid of the dog (as I think many people would)
I don't want anyone to think I am placing blame or being unsympathetic when I say my next thought, because I'm not. However, I do think that dogs communicate in very sublte ways, and humans miss those cues sometimes if they don't know what the cue means or they are preoccupied. dogs always give behavioral warnings that something is amiss, however subtle or fleeting the warning is. I find it hard to believe that the dog just one day decided to pick the baby up by the head and shake it around. There must have been something wrong before this happened and the clues just weren't detected
I think that a professional trainer would need to meet the dog before deciding whether the dog was a real danger to all humans and could not be rehabilitated and therefore the only recourse is euthanasia. It is a terrible thing that happened, but I also think that it would be terrible to just euthanize without first confirming it was the only avenue.

ITA!!!!!
Dogs definitely give cues, and it may have actually been playing. My dogs take anything they can and shake it really hard, toys, shoes, my arm...etc....and I know they would not think twice about grabbing a baby. My dogs actually get even more riled up when you try to get something from them or pull your arm away. They are just animals, playing, acting instinctively. I highly doubt this means that the dog needs to be euthanized. It either needs owners who will WATCH it all the time when with small children or if someone without children takes it, fine too.
I really think the answer here is never leaving children who are too small alone with animals that could overpower them. That is all there is to it. The dog far from sounds like a Kujo that just wants to attack. I sure hope they do not put the dog down.

Re: My friends dog attacked their baby..just a note to be aware
Wow! I just saw this was bumped..
The baby is doing very very well, no long term damage was suffered but she was VERY VERY lucky. The dogs teeth came within 1 cm of her brain..she was monitored for weeks to check on brain swelling or any other changes.
The dog was put to sleep...they could not adopt her out, no one was willing to take her but it's understandable. It was a very vicious and unexpected attack.
Here is a pic of little miss Delaney...my friend said to go ahead and share. She is adorable. Image Attachment(s):

so beautiful and glad she's OK. My DS and I were cuddling with our lab while DS was having his bottle this morning. It was the cutest thing, DS was petting him while drinking..... I cannot imagine my pup doing anything like that, but you never do know.....

Re: My friends dog attacked their baby..just a note to be aware
I'm glad she's ok and doesn't have any lasting damage.
I'll admit, I'm also relieved that the dog was put down. I think it would have been unfair to adopt the dog out to another family, who knows if it would have been an isolated event.
