My hat's to all ladies that commute to NYC
I have been in a training seminar in the City since Monday.
SO MUCH walking, standing in subway, etc.... I am totally pooped. I usually work on LI so that has been a very interesting week so far.
I am 26 wks... I don't know how women commute to the City until their due date.
AGAIN.... my hats to all of you who do.
Thanks God it's only 4 days for me!!!!

I second that.
I get tired on my commute and it's only 10 minutes door to door in my car!!

Re: My hat's to all ladies that commute to NYC
LOL the commute to NYC actually wasn't bad at all until about 22 weeks when it started to get uncomfortable. I run into women who tell me they worked until 2 weeks before - I am uncomfortable now but it isn't bad yet - the walking is good exercise I think - but I have NO idea how they last that long I know I won't be able to do the commute that long
Etd to add I don't take the subway - I take the lirr then either walk the mile or take the bus

I have that commute one day a weekand I'm more tired after that day than I am the other days when I drive to work.

Awww, thanks. I hate it with a passion and am supposed to have 30 more days of it. Blech.
I don't take the subway tho, I give people who do a TON of credit! I just take the Express Bus.

Re: My hat's to all ladies that commute to NYC
So far its not that bad bc I get on the train on the first stop so I always have a seat but when I have to travel to midtown for lunch or a meeting I do get completely exhausted....the commute is exhausting.

ITA! When I first got PG I worked in midtown on the east side. I think I was 8 weeks when I quit b/c I could not take it anymore.
Kudos to the women who can!

I don't know how you do it
People are rude and pushy... the smells ... the lack of air... no seats.
Add all of that to a day where you are feeling particularly hormonal and

Re: My hat's to all ladies that commute to NYC
Awwww thanks! I guess when you are used to doing the commute it can be a bit easier.
I'm only 17 weeks so I know the tough part hasn't come yet. I still do stairs only to get out of Penn so I figure I'll move to the escalators when I need to. I walk from Penn to Broadway and 20th, I like the walk and it gives me exercise. I'll start to take the subway if I have to but I'm hoping to keep walking until the end.
I'm NOT looking forward to commuting in August from week 36-40, we'll see how that goes. My doctor may write me a note to stop working early as my boss has denied vacation time prior to my due date - some nerve!

Re: My hat's to all ladies that commute to NYC
Funny - I think I am the only one who didn't think commuting was that bad (take LIRR and then about 15 min walk across town - which towards the end was more liek 20-25). The only days I hated it when I was preggo was when it snowed - since no one shoveled and I was so scared of falling as I walked across town - I often took the subway with DH - longer way to go but felt safer. Oh and feeling queasy on the LIRR and hoping not to puke - wasn't fun either!
I worked up until the day my water broke at 37 weeks. I did the stairs at Penn to up until the end - felt it was my exercise. Now I only do it once a week and I miss working!

Remember when the 2 preggo's got a seat on the Shuttle?
I commuted to NYC and walked 15 minutes after my 40 min LIRR ride. The commute only bothered me one day when I was on the LIRR after a blizzard. The trains were delayed and then I had to stand in the aisle the whole way to Penn. Noone gave me a seat even though I was clearly pregnant. I was hot from standing with my coat on and with the crowded train. I started getting dizzy and then I started to cry hysterically. Finally someone gave me a seat.
My long hours are what bothered me the most. I remember being 7-8 months pregnant and getting home after 9PM after I had left my house at 7AM!

Re: My hat's to all ladies that commute to NYC
i think LIRR is a little cleaner than the subways and platforms etc... also you're more inclined to get a seat. i don't show yet but i cant tell you how often i see no one give up their seat to an elderly or pregnant person - its a disgrace! last week this poor guy on crutches got on (subway floor was wet from rain etc. - I offered him my seat because no one else did).

Re: My hat's to all ladies that commute to NYC
My commute consists of LIRR and 2 subways. I worked until 39weeks when I couldn't stand it any longer.
I started work again this week. When I got to Penn and started walking to my subway, the first thing I noticed was that I wasn't in pain!! The last few weeks of my pregnancy were constant pressure, sharp pains and waddling!

Re: My hat's to all ladies that commute to NYC
once this guy almost pushed me off the train because he wanted to get off and it was so crowded.. I just felt like crying because people are so inconsiderate... what do you want me to do jump up so you can get off, when I have hardly any space to stand as it is? oh well... there are some good people, by people I mean women, cause they are more likely to give up their seat for you...

Re: My hat's to all ladies that commute to NYC
Aww - this was nice to come across. My commute on the LIRR is the better part of it since I always get a seat (both ways). With the exception of getting on and off the train. I get bumped and pushed all the time and then I get people jumping in front of me to get to the platform stairs. I definitely move slower now and with more caution but it bothers me that people - women especially - take advantage and get in front of me.
I used to take the three flights of stairs up to the platform but now I only take them down. At about 25 weeks I decided to stop before my heart lept out of my through.
The worst part is the subway ride. I try to let trains go so I can get a less crowded one - I usually stand and for the most part don't mind since it's only three stops. The crowding is hard to handle. On the N the other day I actually had a woman leaning on me to stand I try to make the best judgement calls I can. If I can wait for another train I will but if I have to stand I prepare myself to do it. I never go in expecting people to give up their seats - it was my decision to get on. Although I do appreciate when people do it. But - I hate when there is an empty seat and people huff and puff when I take it and sit next to them. I also hate when people jump in front of me to take a seat (I am clearly pregnant) although many times they get yelled at by other passengers.
Vent over...

I think about that all the time when pregnant women tell me they commute or commuted back and forth to the city while pregnant!!!!

Re: My hat's to all ladies that commute to NYC
I don't commute into the city since I live here, but I do have to ride the train almost everyday. I live way uptown and work and rehearse in midtown. I'm on the subway for about 30 min. each way and almost always have to stand. I don't mind the standing, but I wish people would pay a little more attention. I have been pushed and elbowed in the belly numerous times!!

Re: My hat's to all ladies that commute to NYC
With my first pregnancy my commute was a breeze -- a 45 minute, almost door-to-door express bus.
Now I take LIRR and walk 15 minutes to work. I always get a seat so it's not bad. And in good weather I like the walk. But I'm only 14 weeks, so that feeling might change.

Re: My hat's to all ladies that commute to NYC
I do have to agree with the shoving and pushing - I have gotten hit a few times by men with their bags who aren't paying attention - and have been shoved out of the way by a few men in their 50's for going too slow. I was offered a seat twice - by another woman - usually people just stare at your belly and then pretend to sleep.

Re: My hat's to all ladies that commute to NYC
Well, one morning I did not get a seat in the subway. From Flatbush to Union square -14th street. It was an express but I hated everybody that morning. For the past 2 days, 2 ladies gave me their seat. I was so appreciative.
I had to walk 4 blocks to and from the subway but I have to admit that the stairs were the real killer.
