my heart is breaking...
i just got off the phone with a very close friend of mine from college. He is one of 2 of the people that I still talk to from when I was in collgege.
He proposed to his fiancee and then found out shortly after that she's pregnant. she already has a son that's about 9 years old I think.
Anyway, they found out on Christmas eve that their baby has a diaphramatic hernia. That means his lower diaphram has a hole in it. Also, the baby's left and right lobes aren't connected in the baby's brain 
They got 2nd opinions, from the children's hospital in MA (they're from MA). They said the baby has to have surgery immediately after being born. They won't be allowed to hold him for a while and don't know how successful the surgery will be.
To top it off they just set their date for next month to get married at city hall. They said they don't have the $ to have a reception. I want to do something really special for them, but don't know what to do. Any suggestions?
I can't help but feel helpless - I wish I was closer so I could do more.

I am so sorry! I pray that the baby pulls through!
Can you take them out to a wedding dinner perhaps? is itjust you all or are there more people in your inner circle?

that's just it- they're from MA and I'm in NY. He doesn't talk to anyone from college except me anymore either. He said it'll just be immediate family and close friends invited and they're not planning on doing anything afterwards.
I wish I knew the area more to call a few places to see if I called his mom if we could pool enough $$ together to get them a reception... even an extremely basic one.. or even a nice restaurant if we could rent a room.
I don't know any of his friends. I've never even met his fiancee...

That's terrible!!  I'm so sorry for your friend and his fiancee. 
I hope the baby pulls through and can lead a normal life.

My gosh, that's terrible. My heart goes out to them as well. I would think just a call and an e-mail now and then to tell them your thinking of them and that you are there to talk if they need you will do the best. They probably aren't much in the mood for a celebration right now anyway.

Call up his mom and see what you can do. I'm sure she can help round them up.. and just do a buffet or some type of reception like that. In the end, anything that you do will be so much more than they would have done and it'll be so meaningful to them!

I think this is what I'm going to do. I just wrote up a list of stuff that I'm going to go over. I am going to call my friend again tomorrow to just kind of feel around more... see how many people he invited and stuff like that...

What about trying to organize a fundraiser for the baby after it's born? A lot of bars will help out with stuff like that. You pay the bar their price per person and add on an extra $20 that goes to the family. I went to one once for a fundraiser for a walk and between the price and donations they earned over $3,000.

That is so terrible to hear. I hope the baby pulls through and leads a happy and healthy life. As for what you can do for the couple, I'm thinking just your presence would mean a lot to them. If you feel the need to do more, maybe you can get them a nice hotel room for their wedding night, complete with champagne (apple cider for the mommy to be) and chocolate covered strawberries. A nice night away from everything going on could be very much appreciated.
