My interesting experience at orientation yesterday
We had orientation for Alex's new class - the teacher is crazy, crazy, crazy. But, good crazy when it comes to the kids, just a little too crazy for me to relate to as an adult
So, before introductions, all the kids came into the room and started playing a little, while the teacher was getting organized. There wais a little boy playing on the floor with some cars. Alex plops down next to him and asks to play with him and he says no, and literally body blocks the toys. His parents are sitting on the floor right next to him.
I figured, this is typical toddler behavior, but I didn't want the kids to start fighting right as the teacher was going to begin, so I intervened and said to Alex, it's ok, there is no need to fight about toys because there are SO many toys in the class. Let's go play with something else.
The father comes up to me in a HUFF and says "they weren't fighting you know", and I was like, um, yeah, I know.
Alex's new teacher saw it all happen - she came over and sat on the floor with the little boy and explained that school is different than home, and that at school we have to share our toys. Then the mom starts saying I don't know why we force these little kids to share, it's so not fair to them, and really, why do we teach them this lesson? When, as a teenager or an adult do you ever really have to share?
I tried to explain why sharing is an important concept for people to learn so they can adapt socially in the world as they transition through school, college and work, but then I just stopped talking because she rolled her eyes at me.
This should be an interesting year!

This is the reason, I could never, ever teach. Even sitting at the computer screen, my first impulse is to smack those parents. I guess that's another reason I couldn't teach.

Re: My interesting experience at orientation yesterday
I have to say, I was very impressed with how the teacher handled the situation almost immediately. I feel good about the class, and how Alex will fare. And THANKFULLY, with the exception of this one little boy, all the other children were so unbelievably sweet. Mostly girls, all on the precocious side. I think Alex is going to do very well this year

Suggested response for next time:
"I'm glad being a selfish b1tch is working for you."
Can't wait to hear the stories from this woman. Her poor son better watch out. I'm pretty sure Alex can give him a run for his money. If not, maybe we can send Ava or Bella down!

I'd pay good money to see the "brat pack" take care of this little boy

Forget the kid, if you're sending the whole pack down, they could take on the mom.

OMG, Barb, that was quite possibly the funniest thing I've read all year!

And these will be the parents who go through life feeling that their child can do no wrong. Ehh...I feel bad for his future teachers because his parents are going to be major PIA.

Wow what a moron. It's "unfair" to teach a kid to share??? This kid is going to get a real reality check once school starts.
