My Mom's surgery went really well...
I just wanted to update on my mom's surgery since so many people sent prayers our way, which really must have gotten through because everything went well.
It was a LONG LONG day. We had to get to the hospital at 11:30am and they took her in the OR at 1:45 ---- then she wasn't done until after midnight. She was in surgery for more then 10 hours.
However there were a few possible circumstances about how they would proceed once they opened her up and saw how much damage there was inside of her ----- and the route they ended up taking seems like it was a good one and the surgery should be successful for many years to come.
I was able to finally go in with my sister to see her just before 2am, she was just coming out of anesthesia and she looked great. She was so happy to see us and seeing her felt like a weight off of my shoulders.
I think this surgery is really going to improve her quality of life, immensely.
I thank you all for your prayers and well wishes for my mom and our family.
Melissa

If I may ask, what kind of surgery did she have?

They are saying maybe 5 days, depending on how she heals.
When they opened her up they said that her tissues inside were paper thing...because of all the meds she's been on for the Crohn's Disease for all these years. They are really worried about things not holding because of how weak her tissues are, so they want to be careful.
She won't be going back to work after this....maybe not ever. They said they don't want her doing anything that would require her to be on her feet or lift anything over 10 lbs for the rest of her life...so unless she finds another job, she might not be going back to work.

Ugh..that Prednisone..you'd be surprised how resilient the body can be though. Give it some time. She may be able to go back to some type of job that could be fufilling without having to do anything physical. Please remind her to take it easy. Everyone will have to help her for a while.

She was only on steroids for like 2 months back 20 years ago when she was first diagnosed. She had horrible side effects so they took her off. She's been on Pentasa for years and they thing the tissue damage is from the Remicaide inffusions. But they did heal a LOT that she had going on, so it's like a Catch 22.
They might train her to be a customer service rep at her bank. She is the head teller now. If she was a CSR she'll have a desk job ---- so we'll see how that goes.

I want to say somewhere around 2 years? It was pretty new when she first went on it. She would have 8 weeks of treatments, then a certain amount of time, about 3 months, off.
Her last infusion was at the very beginning of April and she won't have her next one until May.
