I don't know what to do.

They barely know me, so if I give them push back, they're going to assume the worst.

But, from an HR perspective, they really don't NEED to test my blood...I'm not going to be working with patients, children, nor the disabled.

THIS SUCKS. I faxed over my medical records that show other vaccines I've had...hopefully they'll waive the bloodwork on me, but I doubt it. Chat Icon

EXACTLY! Let me tell you- my first task is going to be explaining that people who are NOT going to be working with the patients will NOT need to do the bloodwork.

See, this is what I get for being the FIRST HR person at a medical facility.

I agree....are you working in some sort of medical facility? The only time I was even asked to get a blood test was for a job I considered in a medical office. They would have required a hepetitis test & shot.

Yes, but get this- they said I can waive the Hep B because I'm not working with patients...so why the rest of the stuff then???

I am SO upset, but like I said- I think if I give them push back, they'll assume the worst. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

interesting. I understand. Taking blood you can barely feel the needle. I know that probably does not make you feel much better, but I get blood test monthly and at this point I don't even know they are happening.

If it is a privacy issue, which I think it is to an extent, then you may need to warn them of the legalities. From what you have posted about this new job, it seems they know for a fact that they need you & your knowledge. I think it is possible to bring this up in a way that helps them rather than turns the attention on you in a negative light.

Thanks, Mel.

All intelligent, rational thought has left my body.

There is no way that I can discuss this in any type of coherent way.

All communication I've had with them on this topic has been via email- that way, they won't know I'm crying.

She's still going to review my medical info that I sent and let me know what I "still need"...

I just can't think of a non-confrontational way to say "NO, You really DON'T need any of that"...Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

See if you can find out what the blood test is for. Is it to show immunity or is it needed for medical clearance by the doctor who is doing your physical? If your own doctor is doing your work physical and he/she does not require blood for medical clearance than you may be able to get away with no bloodwork if they accept your vaccination record and your doctors clearance.

Well since they are waiving the Hep B test- then what other things do they want to test for- if you don't mind me asking?

Chat Icon you'll be ok... I promise! it hurts more to tweeze your eyebrows, really! you can't even feel it most of the time.

I HATE needles too and I never look. I turn my head in the other direction the whole time. I don't want to see the needle, vial, none of it! It takes seconds.

They want to draw blood to test for rubella and varicella (Chicken Pox).

I can show documentation that I've had 2 measles, mumps, rubella vaccines. I know that I had the chicken pox as a child, but I don't have any documentation on it.

Then, they want to do a 2 step TB test. I had a TB test done in 1984, but I'm assuming it's too old.

They said I can waive Hep B.

eta; at my job we do the same thing. They have to have the TB or provide proof of it within the last 6 mos. They can waive the Hep B.

DH has to go through this all the time. He has worked in a mental health facilty since 1998, but because its part (techincally, not physically) of a medical hospital, the HR rules are the same.

He also does not work with patients.

They have changed admistrative stuff several times & he switched departments, so on paper who he works for changed a few times, even though he was always at the same hospital & each time they make him get re-vacinated for things he has proof of being vacinated for, because it doesn't show up on his blood tests.

They also require the TB test to be done periodically.
It does seem a bit extreme for non medical personel.

If you are the first HR person at this job can you start it out by saying staff without patient contact should not have to undergo blood tests, etc?

I hate, HATE needles too. The only way I've gotten through a blood test was to not look & breathe deep. If I see a needle under my skin, I'm going down for the count.

The parent company of this company has an HR person in CA. She seems to be completely unaware that this is an unusual request for employees without patient contact.

Sue, I'm the same way, all rational thoughts go out the window, and I try to come up with any scenerio that I can to rationalize NOT having to take blood. Plus I'm a fainter (it's even noted in my doctors file!) and I'm embarrased to admit that when I got my ears pierced when I was younger, I passed out as well. Chat Icon

Can you ask your DH to go with you and keep you occupied? I recently had to go for a blood work up, and DH came along, held my hand and kept me busy while they took the blood. Afterwards, I was able to sit and calm my body down for a few minutes and sipped a cup of very cold water. It helped ALOT!

I hate to say it, but I don't think you are going to get around the TB test. When I was teaching in CA, I had to get one once a year. I think they don't fool around with TB since it is so contagious. If you are working in a medical facility, even without patient contact, I can see them making you do that one. Chat Icon Chat Icon

ETA- the TB test is really minor - not at all like taking blood Chat Icon

I actually used to pierce ears. Go figure.

I passed out cold when I had my second MMR vaccine.

It's been a while, but from what I remember, it is more like a pin prick in your arm. Then you go back a few days later and they check to see if you have had a reaction. If so, then I think they ask you to get a chest x-ray to make sure you have no traces of it. The only person I knew who had to get the chest x-rays was someone who grew up in another country and had been exposed at some point.

For the TB test, they insert a needle under your skin (not into the muscle like a vaccination) and inject a fluid so you might see a little bump where they do it. If you get a reaction, you have been exposed to TB at some point - it doesn't mean you have it - and you will never have to get the test again. if you don't get a reaction you have never had TB exposure and will have to get the test once a year.

if you are working in a medical facility, its probably standard practice for all employees to have blood tests. they will probably only have to draw a couple of tubes, it shouldn't take more than a few minutes. Chat Icon Chat Icon

Very surprised a CA based company is requiring it. CA is the most pro-employee state. Based on that alone, I would say you probably aren't getting out of it. They've already gone through the legalities I'm sure.

Just don't look. Lay down when you take it. If they have to needles, I've had places use pediatric needles on me. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Changing the subject a bit, I remember a friend applying for a job at a hospital. They asked for a stool sample! Chat Icon
I would give blood any day than having to poo (and catch) in a cup. Yikes! Imagine having to drive in your car with that sitting next to you? Chat Icon
