Re: My NYC souvenir! BEDBUGS!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am so sorry you had to go through this. There was a dateline special or some other news thing about bed bugs a few cays before I was supposed to go away. To make myself more comfortable in the hotel I brought my own sheets and small blanket. I know this wouldnt solve the problem if there was one but it made me sleep easier.

The dateline special also said the best place to check for bedbugs is behind the headboard because that does not move or under the matteress where they are not disturbed by changing sheets

Re: My NYC souvenir! BEDBUGS!!!!!!!!!!!! 8/03/06 UPDATE!!
Wow- Glad that you are pursuing this with the hotel and that they are being upfront with you. I hope you are feeling better.
I saw a report that a few months back that a lot of the ritzy hotels in NYC had bedbugs.
A couple of people that I work with got them from hotels that we were on layovers in. Keep us posted

Re: My NYC souvenir! BEDBUGS!!!!!!!!!!!! 8/03/06 UPDATE!!
My arm LOOKS better, but is still pretty itchy. The cortisone cream the dermatologist prescribed seems to be doing it's job. The welts aren't raised anymore...just red and it looks like they are bruising (Did I mention...I have Thalessemia which is a form of anemia so bites on me develop into bruises and take FOREVER to go away ). I had some on my leg as well and those are still REALLY itchy and hard to reach in the middle of the night. Thanks so much for asking! Yeah, the General Manager did say they would never deny this happened to me and take full responsibility for this incident. What that means...I guess I'll find out next week. I hope they don't offer me a free stay in their hotel!

I agree! I wouldn't want a free hotel stay but that's what they'll probably offer.

So did I miss something...are they going to make this up to you somehow? Perhaps fully refund the stay or give you gift certificates to restaurants - tickets to a show?
Hope you are feeling better!

Re: My NYC souvenir! BEDBUGS!!!!!!!!!!!! 8/03/06 UPDATE!!
I'm sorry I didn't see this post ealier. I worked in the hotel industry for over 10 years, and I tell you, this happens alot!! Sofa beds are rarely used, so this is their perfect hiding place!
You did exactly what you were supposed to do, and please make sure to be on top of it. If they don't call you the minute they said the would, then call right back, and document each and every phone call. Keep each receipt for anything you had to buy to treat the bedbugs. If they comp you room, then that's just not good enought...ask for compensation. If they refuse, you have witnesses and pictures, so you have a case if you want to take it that far.
When I stay in hotels, I immediately take off the comforter. They only get washed around 4 times a year!! I take my own Lysol (yes, I'm manic) and spray the sheets, and the bathroom. You never know how effecient the housekeeper was, or wasn't.
Again, sorry this happed to you, but I hope they take responsibility and properly compensate you for your inconvenience.
Kepp us posted.

Re: My NYC souvenir! BEDBUGS!!!!!!!!!!!! 8/03/06 UPDATE!!

So Rose825 (Pauline), another friend and myself went on our 3rd annual girls-getaway trip this past weekend. We went to Manhattan and had (overall) an awesome time!. We stayed at the Hotel Beacon (more on that in a minute) and were upgraded to a suite. (Turns out to be not so great in the longrun). We participated in this "game" called Accomplice New York (www.accompliceny.com). HIGHLY recommend it!!!!!! Kinda like Amazing Race in the city. It was AWESOME. Went to eat at Caliente Cab Company. Good Mexican food. Had dessert at DIP (thanks ladies for the great suggestion). AWESOME fondue place! However...there were some not so glorious events that took place as well: Rose825 now suffers from a possible stress fracture in her foot for all of the walking around the city. Penn Station was on fire when we tried to come back home. We all had some panic attacks and decided to cab it. AND...I GOT BEDBUGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Or as the dermatologist put it, a "bedbug arthropod assault". She told me to alert the hotel immediately and the Board of HEalth. (I slept on the pull-out sofa where evidently the mattress had never been cleaned or changed).
My question is, do I have any recourse here? I emailed a letter, pictures of my arm (14 bites that are soooooooooo disgusting and painful) and a copy of the letter from the dermatologist. What should I do? Should I notify the BBB? BTW- it was a VERY nice hotel, polite staff, just infested pull-out sofa. EWWW! ************************************* UPDATE:
Well...after I sent the email with the pictures to the hotel, I still didn't hear back so I decided to call. I first spoke to (and relayed the whole story to) the front desk manager who then forwarded my call to manager of housekeeping (who I had to repeat my call to) who then told me the General Manager would get back to me. Of course he didn't so I called again and left my phone #. He called me back in the morning and was VERY nice. He said he and the hotel were so sorry this happened, how am I feeling, blah...blah...blah. ANd THEN said the sofa0bed was investigated and...get ready for this...he said it was INFESTED with bedbugs!!!!!!!! He said they hotel staff wrapped the sofa in plastic, brought in downstairs (16 floors) and disposed of it. He said they will most likely have to burn it! I was gagging when he said infested. Now the next step is that the owner (I believe he said) will be calling me next week. He is on vacation but has all the documentation. So my next update will be after my next call. Thanks to all who sent hugs my way. (You KNOW you would only hug me via internet as to not get too close to the pretty welts! )
oh my god
please tell me you got rid of any clothing that touched that sofa bed...even if your purse touched it....
you can sue -esp now that they admitted it.
and let me tell you, if the sofa bed has it, then the bed has it and they travel within walls so it probably means that entire hotel has it.....ugh im gagging at the thought
ans those things multiply like crazy
they lay hundresd of eggs then feed on their prey to grow.
HAVE YOU GOTTEN ANY NEW BITES SINCE THE HOTEL???? HAS YOUR HUSBAND???

Re: My NYC souvenir! BEDBUGS!!!!!!!!!!!! 8/03/06 UPDATE!!
Thank you all for your well wishes. What's really funny is that I NEVER complain about anything. I am the type of person that usually isn't really affected by too many things- I brush alot off. But when this happened, and I had to come home to my young children, plus having to go to the doctor and wear a cream that inhibits me from holding my little one...well, I had to call the hotel. I'm pretty proud of myself. I took the normal precautions that one usually does in a hotel room. I took off the comforter, flicked the sheets, beat the mattress, etc. I guess it's not enough though! Well, let me be a lesson to all of you travelers...just say no to sofa beds! And THOUROUGHLY inspect your sleeping quarters!

Re: My NYC souvenir! BEDBUGS!!!!!!!!!!!! 8/10/06 UPDATE!!
Well, how much did it cost you for the night in the room? Was it less than $250? About how much are you looking for?
If anything, you can add in the expenses of doctor visits, prescriptions, etc. and have them pay for that as well.
Its kinda hard to put a price on health though

I'm so sorry that this happened to you!!! I don't think that $250 is reasonable. You should get the $$$ you paid to stay there back, plus some for your pain and suffering IMO.

I agree. I would tell him that you are not pleased with that amount AT ALL. Unfortunately I dont know what you would legally be entitled to but i feel that it would be much more than $250. I would tell him that if he doesnt up that amount pronto that you are considering contacting a lawyer to see what your rights are.
