First your hotel room should be comped.
I agree mention attorney to see what he comes back with. If he can offer $250, he can offer more.

I assume that it is in addition to a full refund! I woudl definitely try to get more. Tell them that you had days worth of agony not to mention the* ick* factor. Let them know that you are considering going to an attorney or worse, the media and see if that is the best offer they can come up with.

this is what I would expect:
1) full refund of stay
2) reimbursement for all time taken off & opportunity costs- so for example if I had to miss two days of work- I'd want not only my pay but some cut of commissions too- b/c if I don't work I don't get commission.
3) reimbursement of all doctor fees, prescriptions, etc.
I wouldn't want to make money off of this or bring in an atty- but I WOULD want all my costs reimbursed.

After reading those articles - I would first ask him for that offer in writing. then, once i had it in writing (showing that they accept responsibility for what happened) i would call him back and tell him that you would like to - at the very least - be compensated for dry cleaning costs related to having your bedding at home cleaned, a new mattress pad for your home bed, and possibly even get reimbursed for a new mattress and box spring. THEN, you want to be refunded for the hotel, and then you want to be compensated for gas related to going to the doctor, any doctor co-pay, and perscription co-pay and money for your TIME - that you had to take out of your life to take care of this, and FINALLY some extra money on top of that for pain and suffering. In fact I would itemize it all on a spreadsheet and then send it to him.

How much did you spend on the room to begin with? I would demand at least that much back, plus complain more. Did you have any doctor costs or medication costs? $250 doesn't seem like enough - you had freakin' bedbugs infested in your room!

I read this post to my brother who was a Director of Guest Relations & Services at a 4 star hotel in Manhatten (Not the one you mentioned) and he thinks they are being more then generous. I do not agree but, he said that would be more then his hotel have paid.

Thank you all for your great advice. Yes, the room was $250 but I just assumed that a reimbursement on the room was a given. When I spoke to this man a few days ago, he said they would compensate me to where I would be "extremely satisfied". Well, that doesn't do it for me. First was the doctor's visit. Only a $15 copay but I had to arrange for my children to be watched so I could go, then I was there for over an hour, then given a cortisone cream so powerful that it inhibited me from holding my child for 1/2 an hour after application which was supposed to be applied 4 times a day (not realistic). The laudering of the items I brought to the hotel was ridiculous...i must have washed everything 5 times each. I stripped my bed at home and lysoled (sp?) my mattress...not sure if that will do anything though. Nevermind the pain. I am extremely itchy and the welts burn. Plus I have Thalessemia which is a blood disorder (like anemia) and now my bites have turned into huge bruises. My whole arm is purple. I look like I was beaten.
My friend's husband is a lawyer (not personal injury though). He researched bed bug cases and said that if this went to court, I would be offered a heck of a lot more than $250.
I cannot express to all of you how this is so out of character for me. I never complain about anything. I eat food in restaurants that I don't like cause I don't like to send stuff back and cause problems. I had a contractor working in my house that didn't show up for weeks at a time. He just showed up one day to resume working. I yelled at him a little, but that was it. I am such a doormat and a pushover, but this affected my health and my family's health (Don't know if God forbid I brought anything home with me). I just feel that it deserves a respectable compensation.

Well, in that case, $250 is well not worth it.
I would persue. If they want to offer you more without getting a lawyer involved, then great........but you most definitely shouldnt be getting "just the refund back of your room".
That is BS!!!
And if it happens to be a reputable hotel that charges that amount per night, the least they can do is give you a decent amount for their dirty hygiene!!

I work for a hotel company and unfortunately it happens a lot more that you would think.
The hotel employees are just as grossed out about this kind of stuff if that is any consolation.
I just emailed the reservations dept to see what kind of compensaton we give....waiting on an answer.

When I emailed the original letter and the doctor's diagnosis, I also included pics of my arm. The bruises that I have now are hard to see in a picture. In person they are scary!
