my poor Cleo passed suddenly
We were away this weekend in Boston and got a call from DH's parents when they went to go feed the kitties on Sat night that one of our cats had unexpectedly died
Cleo (not my avatar pic, that's Whiskers) was only 12 years old, in perfect health and such a loving affectionate kitty. They said it seemed as if she just keeled over in the hallway and died. We came home on Sunday and buried her in our backyard and are going to create a little memorial garden for her so we can visit her when we like
I cried like a baby when we found out and when we came back and saw her, and buried her. I just bawled at the thought that we weren't there with her and she lay there for who knows how long before they found her. I also feel so badly for my other kitty Whiskers - i don't know how long she was lying there for (we left Thurs, they found her Sat) and i don't know how affected he was by it either.
Our house definitely feels a bit emptier without her, and i think Whiskers knows she's gone since he has been super affectionate since then. They were brother and sister and only knew each other their whole lives
I'm so worried about Whiskers now - will he be ok? He's never been alone, always had her there with him. They weren't super close, but always around each other. We don't know if it would cheer him up to get another cat, or if it would traumatize him even more.. We'd love to get another one to give him a companion, but i'd hate for it to affect him negatively
has anyone had any experience with this?? what should we do for him?

OMG this is terrible, I am SO sorry. I am so sad for you!
Ever since we put helmut to sleep 2 days ago, his mother, Bear, has been unusually affectionate and has been sleeping in his "spot." I honestly don't know what the best thing to do in a situation like this is. I'd say just keep an eye on Whiskers, give her some time to adjust, and reassess.
Again i'm so sorry for your loss.

Re: my poor Cleo passed suddenly
First... I"m sorry for your loss
I'm not sure about cats... as while I have two, they are the first two I've ever had...
I know with my dogs, 4 years ago, I had my two.. Max and Vessa... Vessa was stricken with a spinal diesase very suddenly and had to be put down. Max has always had another dog in his life.. and Max and Vessa were together for 7 years... He definately showed signs of depression (even though he had the two cats around)... and I think it's as normal for animals as it is for humans. We did end up getting a pup about 2 weeks later...but that was more for me than him.
There's no telling if getting another cat will cheer up Whiskers or not, or how he will react.. Sorry - not much help!

OMG. I am so so sorry. I know how much you loved your cats.
I know when our cats died one by one over the years, they did experience personality changes. They eventually seemed to adjust.

Re: my poor Cleo passed suddenly
Im so sorry. I lost one of my beloved cats almost 8 years ago and I still miss her. I can't imagine being away and coming home to that news. Heartbreaking! I had another cat then (still have her, she 17 yrs old now) and she adjusted pretty well. They were together for about 8 years when Max died. I just gave lots and lots of attention although that's nothing new but I guess she was the only receiver so she was in her glory in a way.
