My poor guy is having surgery on his tail tomorrow
It's a long story, but one of my cats (Finn) hurt his tail on the recliner on my couch. (PLEASE anyone who has a recliner, MAKE SURE YOU ALWAYS PUT IT DOWN WHEN NOT IN USE AND CHECK FOR ANYTHING SHARP UNDERNEATH) 
Anyway, we went to the vet last week and were told it was likely he would need the last 3 inches of his tail amputated but we could wait and see and hope it heals some more between then and now. We asked if there was any risk in waiting and they said no. Well, we go back today to find out his tail is WORSE and what started as the last 3 inches has turned into nearly half his tail. I'm feeling so sick over this. I know in the long run he will be FINE and that's all that matters here. It's a tail. It's not a leg.. it's not anything significant with his health.. He will be home after the surgery recovering and after 2 weeks he will be his old self, with a shorter tail.... I'm just so aggravated still.
I'm mad at myself for leaving the recliner open and I'm mad at the vet for not informing us that the tail getting worse was a risk in waiting. He's such a sweet cat. Just please keep him in your thoughts for a quick and easy surgery and recovery. Image Attachment(s):

OMG!! Poor Finn!!!! I'm so sorry he had this happen & please don't feel guilty, accidents happen 
You just have to tell everyone he's an manx now with his stubby tail! 
He’s sooooo cute by the way!! Love his ears, the way they sit up on his head, adorable!!

Thanks ladies, he really is such a little champ! We've had to keep him isolated in his own room to keep him from running around too much and to keep the others from bothering his bandaged tail... but I've been saying for the last 10 days if I was isolated in a room with a cone on my head I'd be MISERABLE. This little guy purrs... allllll dayyyyy longggg... 
I just can't wait for this to be behind us.. Poor kid doesn't deserve this!

btw, someone I knew growing up had a kitten DIE when they closed the folding couch (or recliner) and it was underneath.
I dont have any recliners in my house at this point due to paranoia about my pets and my child.

Whaattttt????? WOW! This is why I told my dh I just wanna get rid of the damn thing!!! We went out last weekend to look at couches but didn't see anything we liked yet. With a baby on the way this is just another accident waiting to happen!!!!

I'm sorry to hear he has to have the surgery, but like you said, he'll be fine. He'll probably bounce back faster than you will! for a speedy recovery!

Well .. an update... My dh asked for the price of the surgery yesterday but they said they needed time to calculate and blah blah blah .. in the meantime they kept my dh waiting and he had to get to work so he just left and figured we need to pay it anyway because he needs this surgery. We were both just so aggravated over the situation and were mostly focused on that.
So.. he takes him in this morning... and they want $2300.
ARE.YOU.KIDDING.ME???? For a partial tail amputation?!! So, we didn't leave him there. We called our regular vet (it was a special surgical place who was supposed to do this surgery) and they estimated around $1200. Ok, um. Yeah. That's at least closer to what we figured!!
Anyway I happened to call around to some different vets just to get a ballpark range for this kind of thing and this one place I actually really liked. The woman on the phone spoke to the vet about Finn's situation and said he may not even want to amputate. I explained it seems definite to me because the end of his tail is black and the vet said it doesn't necessarily mean anything. So, we are taking our chances and going to another opinion tonight.
Who knows, maybe we'll get told my sweet boy could keep his whole tail. Honestly, I just want him happy. That's what I care most about. I want this situation behind us and I want my regular old (well, actually young  ) happy cat back. We'll see what tonight's appt brings. To be continued....

Poor Finn (and poor you!).

Wow ladies, it's been such a crazy 24hrs that I'm sorry I didn't update this sooner!!!
So... the second opinion took one look at it and was concerned it may not have been caused by physical trauma. He was concerned Finn may have some condition that was causing cuts to form and spread. He said by amputating the infected section without having all the facts, we ran the risk of doing a partial amputation and then he could develop cuts on the part of the tail that was still there and potentially run up and infect his body. It sounded so scary!! He said we had to be careful, wash our hands, and umm .. me being pregnant.. I got pretty nervous!!! He made us see a veterinary dermatologist ASAP (so, basically, TODAY) to try and get to the bottom of this.
We went to today and she didn't seem concerned at all. She said this WAS caused by physical trauma but that he was not treated properly with the right antibiotics which caused the tail to get pretty badly infected. They cultured his tail to figure out what bacteria is growing so they know which antibiotics to give him. In the meantime, he was switched to a new one which hopefully is the right one, but we will know on Monday.
Oh .. and ready for the shocking news of the day? He may not need his tail amputated. Like. At all.  They said we'll see how he responds to the antibiotics, but they think a majority of his tail should heal and they won't need to amputate quite as much as anticipated (if at all).
It's been such a crazy 24hrs and I miss my little guy (they're boarding him for now and treating his tail) but this should all be FINE when all is said and done.. amputation or not.
I'm so glad we went with our gut after hearing that insane price and went for another opinion. It's such a scary things when doctors don't handle things appropriately.
