My reflections on this mother's day, a reminder to us all but especially for those who were disappointed today...
While today was a great day... I slept late... 7 am and I think I only changed one or two diapers all day (normally about 10), every once in a while I would get this sad feeling just out of the blue... so not me.
Well, I just realized it... I am almost the exact same age my mother was when she was killed suddenly by a drunk driver... and I just realized I am the same age she was on her last Mother's Day on Earth I can't help but think... wow, this is all the time God gave her???
Maybe that day she was disappointed in what my father did or did not do for her to commemorate the day? I know there was no jewelry, just maybe some burnt toast and a handmade card made by my brother and I.
Maybe that day she didn't want to spend it with her MIL?
I know that day was especially sad because her own mother had passed on Mother's day 6 years before.
Maybe that day, she unsuccessfully nudged my Dad so he he would be the one to get up with us so she could sleep in?
Maybe that day she wished for a one day reprieve from crumbs on the carpet, toys strewn in every room, yet another cup of spilled juice and the backaching routine of bathing two kids.
I know a lot of DH's, MIL's and family have disappointed several of you this Mother's Day. It is often an unrecognized and thankless job but please, please, please take solace in the fact that, despite the seemingly neverending poopey diapers, tantrums and teething, we have the best job in the world... we are someone's mother and that alone is the GREATEST GIFT My heart just reminded me of such
To all of the moms on earth, and those in heaven, Happy Mother's Day.

You are very right. I know I may not have received a gift from DH, or even a "Happy Mother's Day" from MIL. But I did not let it get me down today.
I enjoyed the time I spent with my family.
Sorry for your loss, and how sad to have recalled the coincidences of your age and your mom's age at her passing.

Re: My reflections on this mother's day, a reminder to us all but especially for those who were disappointed today...
Beautifully said!!! I didn't have a bad day but, I guess its all your perspective.
Today I had my whole family for dinner and worked pretty hard (although my husband always helps).
Earlier this morning, I took my little one for her ice skating lesson (while my husband was at lacrosse with my older one) and some of the other mom's couldn't believe I was cooking for 15. They were shocked when I told them the older I get the more I realize how very lucky I am to have my family around and for my kids to be able to spend the afternoon running around in the yard with their cousins. I really believe that this is what kids remember as they get older and not standing in a crowded restaurant waiting to eat. Yes, I'm exhausted now but, I had a great day; have a wonderful husband and a great family. Oh and next weekend, I'm having a spa day (that I booked myself) with my best friend.

Theresa, I am sorry you have such negative memories of your Mother's last mother's day.
Maybe she wasn't sad at all that day...maybe she was truly happy to have you and your brother, and relished every moment - from the crumbs on the floor to the bubbly, splashing of bathtime and the sweet cuddles and kisses at bedtime.
Life is all about the way we choose to look at it. I am glad you found a reason to enjoy your day, despite your heavy heart.

Re: My reflections on this mother's day, a reminder to us all but especially for those who were disappointed today...
Well said! I had drafted something similar this morning to post for an annual message but then Maddie hit the keyboard & poof!
I wasn't upset at all. I scooped her up & brought her upstairs for breakfast while DH slept late.
I spent my Mother's Day watching Ironman. Definitely not the traditional for a Mother's Day celebration but in my eyes...this is about celebrating the reason I'm a mom, cherishing my mom - not about the gifts....which by the way was a homemade popsicle jewelry box, some drawings & a card.
I didn't know how much my mom loved me until I became a mom. Now that you know how you feel about the wondertwins, you can tell it's not about the jewelry or new car (in your case ),l it's about getting the greatest gifts life can offer.

Life is all about the way we choose to look at it. I am glad you found a reason to enjoy your day, despite your heavy heart.
My words were not a reflection of my memories of my mom's last day. To tell you the truth, it was 1978, I was 7, and have no memories of the exact day. I have no idea how my mother felt on that day... what I know for certain, in my heart, is that she never imagined it would be her last Mother's Day.
My words were chosen to reflect some of the wishes several moms had on the board for this mother's day... especially those who were disappointed... just to be able to sleep in, to have a DH who would just get up once and get the baby, for their DH to have least thought of getting a card, to have a break from the chores.
All of this hit me as I vacuumed the kitchen floor and washed down two highchairs for the third time today. I was at seeing yet ANOTHER cheerio on the kitchen floor I thought, it's Mother's Day jeez, didn't I just clean this three hours ago?
Then it all came flooding back to me...
My mom only got 7 Mother's Days with me and 4 with my brother.
Just a few years ago, as I sat in the waiting room of my second RE office, I prayed and prayed for the day I would be knee high in poopey diapers, sleep deprived from 3 am feedings, covered in spit up and smelling like formula.
So I do chose to find joy in ALL of it. I then looked at that Cheerio and smiled thinking of how it got there... falling out of one of the four little hands that are so precious to me.
Every moment counts and every part of motherhood is a blessing. Sometimes we all just have to remind ourselves of that
