My sister and friends were not allowed to attend their high school graduation

My sister was placed in a limo she wasn't originally in. Keep in mind she is a kid who worked her a** off in HS, exceled at almost everything, an all around great girl...and because someone brought alcohol in the limo, the driver called the cops and told them he was about to ruin their night.

Not only did this driver ruin their prom, but the school board decided that everyone in the limo could not attend and walk at graduation.

My mom spent most of yesterday crying when the decision was made. It just stinks...It was her last of 6 kids to graduate and they looked forward to it for weeks. I feel terrible for my sister.

Just needed to vent...I can't believe how harshly they were treated.

That is a terrible shame your sister got caught up in all that!

I totally feel for you, but...as a HS teacher who has been in charge of the last four proms our HS had, I can see why the school board decided that. I can't tell you how often the kids come to the prom falling over etc.. It is not safe and you KNOW if god-forbid anything happened to them, the school would be the first one sued and I would be the first one out of a job JUST BECAUSE it was my name on that contract with the catering hall.

Now, I certainly hope that your sister and parents were already made aware of this possiblity BEFORE the prom?! If not, I would be calling that school board ASAP and demanding that it be changed. Good luck and again - I am so sorry for your sister and your family that she got caught up in this!Chat Icon I know how important graduation is to everyone.

Thanks...as much as my mom and sister explained and protested they said because one person messed up, they are all being punished.

Crappy way of being treated after 4 years of hard work. Kids have done a lot worse and were allowed to walk..

My sister spent this weekend holed up and won't go to any of the grad. parties, thats how upset she is. She is really such a great kid, that is what is so upsetting. She was receiving all kinds of honors and mentions.

The situation is teriible and the driver "could" of helped by just discarding the achochal for the kids but in turn, it would be the limo drivers fault if something else should of happened and the kids were drinking...can't look at this one way...

I totally understand what you are saying, and my mom knows the deal as well. They all signed a contract prior to the prom that they would not drink.

The thing in this case though...is that my sister was supposed to be in a huge limo bus. They overbooked the bus, and she and a friend were placed in this other limo to get to the prom-her and the friend sipped water and ignored the others.

Unfortunately, when one messed up all were accounted for. It stinks especially b.c my mom got sick at her middle school grad and missed that one as well...she was in the hospital for 2 days.

They'll get over it, but what a way to end HS. And i really do understand where the schools are coming from. I just think the punishment affects the families too and thats really upsetting.

I do, too - but it's mainly based on the fact that I am a teacher. Sorry - but the second someone brought alcohol in the limo, all bets were off. It's illegal!! People should have gotten out and found another way to the prom.

Totally harsh - but unfortunately in the "sue-happy" society we live in - I don't blame the limo driver one bit! If something happened the driver, school, catering hall - all could have been sued!

As for the school board - I think a no-alcohol policy is pretty standard. I would be shocked if students and parents were not made aware of it beforehand.

ETA: It does totally suck and I feel for you and your family. I'm relieved to see you are able to see both sides of it.

What is odd is that my sister said that when he saw the alcohol, he laughed and said "you kids better behave".

Then he saw a cop car near the limo and FREAKED on them. He pulled over and called the cops. She missed 2 hours of the prom and went right home. What a night to remember!

NOPE! Not even friends. My sis had no clue and was afraid when she went in the limo..she's the type of kid that a little uncomfortable around drinking anyway...I was the same way until i got to college, lol...

If they aren't friends, how did she end up in that limo?
I am so sorry this happened, but, I also don't blame the limo driver who could have gotten in a lot of trouble.

As a high school counselor - I agree with everything you said - I feel badly that your sister was caught up in this - especially since from what you said - it seemed that she wasn't really friendly with the others - but it is certainly not the limo driver who ruined everything for them - it was the other idiot kids who had to have alcohol in the car! My high school brings a breathalizer to the prom, as well as to events like class night and homecoming, where there have been numerous incidents with alcohol - if there is any suspicion that someone may have been drinking - they have to take the breathalizer test - if they refuse, they're not going to be able to go in.

This changes my view. I think they should have give breathalizers to everyone in the limo & let her attend (provided she came up with a 0.0 BAC)

Re: My sister and friends were not allowed to attend their high school graduation

It totally sucks that your family is going through this- however Im happy for once a school is doing the right thing...

The children who were drinking/attempting to drink should be punished andsince there was no way to actually prove who that was... the "you are who you hang around with" comes into play....

I would be so mad about the whole limo situation as well... BUT she was friendly with those in this limo- no? How else would've she ended up in there?

I cant begin to tell you how many times I have declined invitations to things that I really wanted to go too- because
I KNEW that inapporpriate things (whether it be drugs, drinking and driving etc...) would go on- AND GOD FORBID the cops were called... I want no association with any kind of negativity!

See this would only work for those who were actually drinking... it sounds like the kids didnt really get into the bottle- since the driver called the police... The child who initiated it all- who supplied the alcohol- may not have even gotten to drink yet, and then would be able to walk away scott free....

IMO- anyway you spin it- the school district did 100% the right thing!

No, they hadn't really attacked the bottle of alcohol...but some did start drinking. It was within a matter of minutes it was all ended.

Like I said, I know the district did the right thing in the end...just stinks innocent kids get caught up.

And to answer others questions, she knew the kids in the limo..she was "friendly" with two of them but not very close at all. She was upset to be out of the original limo...
