Re: Name change- i changed my mind....
As an actual Ali/Allison, I thought I'd give my input I love both names but I tend to agree with PPs and your MIL. I'm in finance and had a group head who called me Ali since she had known me as a young intern. I have to say, while it was endearing and cute, it always made me feel like a little kid and I felt Allison was more professional.
I like Hayden too!

Well my formal name is Cindy, not Cynthia, not anything else but Cindy. I get all the time (when making travel plans or filling out paperwork), is it Cynthia?
Truly I like my name & if it was Cynthia I don't think I'd ever use it. YET if I went another route & instead of becoming a teacher was an attorney or dr. or in the business field I would feel I'd be taken more seriously w/ a name like Cynthia than Cindy.
If I was naming my daughter I think I'd give her the option.
What about a name that ends w/ Ally or LY & you can still call her alli?
Another informal name person here too...my name is Kim, not Kimberly. My mother decided why name me Kimberly, when everyone is going to shorten it to Kim anyway. I always have issues when filling out legal papers, etc because everyone assumes my name is Kimberly.
What about Allie for a spelling...I think it makes it look less like a "shortened" name. Either way....it's a pretty name.

I like it.
But why are you looking for other's approval? If you like just go with it. It's your kid.

Honestly, I like I formal name, like Alison that you can shorten to Ali. Will she feel silly in her professional life being known as Ali? At least if she has a formal name, even if you never use it yourself, she has options when she's older.
My formal name is Catherine, my parents always called my Cathy, I didn't know until I went to Kindergarten that my name was Catherine.
I'm sorry, I hope you don't take that the wrong way.
i must agree. the full name gives more of a professional appeal. a full name seen, heard or said goes a long way in the professional world. not tim or ricky or mitch. it would be hard for me to call my boss ricky. i just wouldn't take the person as seriously as i should. don't take it personally.

not looking for approval, just opinions....bc as most everyone said that it isnt "formal" enough, it is probly the name we are going to go with....so obviously, what 25 other people said, i was just interested in knowing, thats all.....

My daughter has a friend (Girl) Stevie. Her mother loved the name but everyone kept saying that it wasn't a formal name. She named her Stephanie and they just call her Stevie. She always regrets doing it.

Re: Name change- i changed my mind....
i'm all for naming the baby what YOU and DH want to. i personally don't care what my parents or il's think about names. there is a boys name that i love but my mom is sooooo against. too bad for her!
all that said i do agree that if your daughter becomes a judge, polititian, executive, etc. she may rather have a formal name that one that seems like a nickname.

Re: Name change- i changed my mind....
When my husband and I decide to have another chil and its anotehr girl, he also likes Ally(spelled this way). However, he is a traditionalist and would need something formal so Allyson will be it.
Growing up (I'm 31), i knew a ton of allison's....there must have been 2 or 3 in a class. Then the name died down and just recently, within the last year, I know several people that chose it for their daughters. It's a beautiful name and people are realizing this once again.

Re: Name change- i changed my mind....
Okay well i'm weighing in here. My name is Allison and i go by Ali.
I have always gone by Ali. I'm not a formal name person so Allison was just too much for me personally. Plus i like shortened names/nicknames.
Now at work, everyone now calls me Ali. It's what i'm comfortable with. But i will say this... when i'm on the phone with clients, it is easier to say my name is Allison than Ali. When i say Ali, they think i'm saying Hailey or Callie or whatever else they hear. They never hear/understand Ali. Just thought i'd throw that out there.
However, i'm an informal person so if i were you, i'd go with Ali.

Re: Name change- i changed my mind....
I like Ali! (not surprised you changed your mind - you seemed to be wavering on Hayden).
If it was me, I'd prefer having the formal option to fall back on, but I'm not a huge fan of Allison.
some other options Alicia Alia / Aliya Alivia Alisa Alina
