Need 1 month old sleep help (sorry...long)
I know everyone recommends the book Happiest Baby on the Block, so I ordered it from Amazon. But while I'm waiting for it to come in, I need help.
My 1 month old sleeps in his bassinet for naps and nighttime. I asked a few days ago if I should be putting him down in it for naps and everyone said yes. He was doing GREAT for a few days but now all of a sudden today everytime I put him down he cries. I feed him, change him, and then play with him (tummy time or just mommy time) for maybe 20 - 30 minutes. When I see that he's tired, I swaddle him in the Swaddle Me and then rock him for a minute. Once he's asleep (or close enough to it that I feel confident putting him down) I lay him in the bassinet. He's dead asleep for maybe 3 or 4 minutes and then all of a sudden he wakes up again and starts fussing. I dont run to him right away because I want to see if he'll just fall back asleep. But all day today he didnt...he just ended up crying 2 minutes later. He's tired but its like he's fighting sleep And as soon as I go in and pick him up, he falls back asleep in my arms. He's been sleeping fine in his bassinet up until now...so I just dont understand.
Also, how do you know when a baby doesnt want to be swaddled anymore?? He fights it so bad. Sometimes he sleeps great swaddled, but a lot of times he tries to wiggle out of it while he's in his bassinet. I come in and find hands sticking out. And he kicks so hard -- I wonder if its because the Swaddle Me is loose in the leg part

Re: Need 1 month old sleep help (sorry...long)
I swear our DC are twiins!!! DD is doing the sametthing on she sleeps in the swing because of her reflux and sleep laying flat. She will fall asleep in my arms ,put her down and seriously 2mins later she's screaming! Pick her up fusses a little then is out like a light. She won't let me put her down for nothing. The past few nights I've let her sleep on my chest I'm to tired to fight her to sleep in her swing. I've even tried putting her in her bassinet and samething. I told dh just a little while ago we need to do something about this. His answer, "let her cry it out" he doesn't understand she's to little to let her scream and cry for a long time. I let her sleep in my arms for about 30mins and then try to put her down and that SOMETIMES works. I to don't know what eles to do. Swaddling her seems to be helping a little, she will sleep 3 hrs instead of 2 with the swaddle. I'm slowly reading happiest baby on the block only on page 4 lol its hard cause when she sleeps I go to sleep and when I do try to read she doesn't sleep. IF I get to reading it soon I'll share some info and if I find something that works for dd I'll share that too. Hang in there I'm in the same boat as you

The bassinet has a heartbeat sound (really sounds more like white noise) that I turn on when I put him down. It really doesnt do much of anything for him though.

I hope it gets better for both of us. I thought at first that it was his reflux bothering him, so I would go in and pick him up. But he falls RIGHT back asleep the second I pick him up...so I honestly think he just wants to be held. I cant hold him all day and night though
To be honest with you...I let him cry for 7 minutes today. I felt TERRIBLE, but I had to. He was just fed and changed, so he was fine. I put him down and he cried, so I picked him up and re-swaddled him. I rocked him and put him back down. He fell asleep and then 2 minutes later...BAM...crying again. So, i figured, let me see what happens if he cries for a few minutes. 7 minutes later he was out like a light. He didnt stir again until 2 hours later. But he's just not sleeping for very long stretches. And getting him down is a PITA. I just dont understand because he was sleeping fine days ago. Its like he's sooo tired and he just fights it

Re: Need 1 month old sleep help (sorry...long)
our bassinet has that thing too - it's nothing...
we have a sharper image sound machine that we got a long time ago for ME to sleep better....and when i have it on the white noise setting - it's a DREAM for Em...
it has to be louder than her cry or it's pointless!!!
i have been searching and cannot find the one we have - but ebay has some and even jc penney has one... i'm sure bbb has a homedics version - not sharper image - but go to the store and make sure it can go LOUD...that is all that matters truly!
eta: by bbb this time - i mean bed bath and beyond..
they have this: http://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/product.asp?order_num=-1&SKU=13630208
but go to the store and make sure it gets loud enough!

Re: Need 1 month old sleep help (sorry...long)
here's what worked for my DD and now helping with DS:
-the miracle blanket- MUCH MUCH better than that swaddle me-totally worth getting!!!!!! -a white noise machine for sure -darkened room -being put down in the same spot in the crib -and a binky (which some people don't want to start using and i understand!) but it helps
i just keep going in and will pick up and pat DS's back then place him down...it can take 2x, 4x, 5x...but eventually he is tired enough and gets it and goes down for the nap. i just keep at it. it is annoying but if he takes that nap it's totally worth it. good luck! and try the miracle blanket!!! and like Davenjess said- a LOUD noise machine!

One word PACI
It soothed DD from the moment I started using it...the NUK one...you can always take it away, but right now many babies need that sucking motion to fall sleep

Re: Need 1 month old sleep help (sorry...long)
At that age babies do still want to sleep in your arms, this is where they get their comfort. I understand the need to put them down - but also know, that at that age, there is really no rhyme or reason why they may go right down one day, and need to be rocked another. They are still so young.
I agree and I believe I mentioned this in your other sleeping post - The Miracle Blanket works 1000x better than the Swaddle Me. I would get that or see if you can borrow it from a friend to try out. I just gave mine to my cousin - her twins were sleeping 2 hours at a time at night - and with the Miracle Blanket slept for 5-6 hours at night.
BRU has a white noise machine - it's about 19.00. I def. would get this also.
Keep in mind - I know it's very frustrating, but at that point some babies do just need to be held. I had to rock my son for all naps for the first 6 months of his life. It was exhausting, but really the only thing that would work.

Re: Need 1 month old sleep help (sorry...long)
When DD was 1 month she used to do this too. I think it's because their reflexes are still very sensitive and they keep waking themselves up when on their back. Then when they notice you aren't there holding them, they cry. It will get better!!

ITA with everything she said....I don't think letting them cry also at this age is going to make sense to them at all...at that age I would honestly do what needs to be done to get them to sleep...My DD was just like that, now at 8 months she's a good sleeper and napper thank g-d!!! I don't think you can spoil them that early on

Re: Need 1 month old sleep help (sorry...long)
I have a 5 week old and he is all over the place - some days he will take great naps -other days like yesterday he only slept 10mins at a time then when my DH came home and could entertain our 3 1/2 year old I sat down with DS and he slept for three hours with my DH and I alternating holding him.
We have a white noise CD if you dont want to buy a white noise machine - if you do a search for a white noise CD you should be able to find it- sorry I cannot remember where i bought mine from but it was online.
Its early days- I think you have to ride it out for at least the first 3 months before you can expect any type of schedule in most newborns.

Re: Need 1 month old sleep help (sorry...long)
My 1 month old is like that too some days. I'll think he is in a deep sleep so I put him down only for him to wake up several minutes later. At this age they are still adjusting to life outside of the womb. They were inside of us for nine months so it's only natural that they just want the comfort of being close sometimes.
On those days I just hold him most of the time and don't really get much of anything done. I've become pretty good at doing things with one hand. I look at it as right now my main job to take care of him, other things can be put on hold. I just focus on the fact that he will only be this little for a very short time period and I'm trying to enjoy every moment of it. There may be no rhyme or reason as to why the swaddle works one day and not the next and you can drive yourself crazy trying to figure things out. At this age, I think you really just need to go with the flow and not have too many expectations about what they should or should not be doing.
