Re: Need Advice - 1 year old who still doesn't move much
Posted by sal79
honestly, if he cannot move himself around by a year- either by scooting or creeping or crawling, and cannot pull himself to a stand, i would probably call EI. first of all- once you call, it takes about a month for them to get all set up, so best case scenario, you call, and he is denied for services cuz he learned to do all this. second- what is the harm in calling? he may just be a little physically delayed, and EI is wonderful- but the earlier you start the better. btw- is he pulling to stand? because i know thats one of the milsetones they look for at one year to qualify for EI

Thank you so much everyone...i'll keep you all posted.
Interesting tidbit - while EI is free in NY it appears it isn't in NJ unless your income is less than 350% of the poverty level. Which for a family of 3 is $60,500 total family income. Anything above that you have a copay. Interesting how the two states differ. This doesn't change me wanting him to get any assistance he needs...to me its worth every dime I will need to pay. And who knows, maybe he won't qualify or he won't need it.
Thanks again
really? i though EI was a national thing.
It is national, however, before age 2 the cost is picked up by the county and from age 2 to school age it is picked up by the school district. Due to the increase inn EI cases in recent years, New Jersey recently instituted the co-pay to help alleviate the financial strain of the cost for their counties and districts.
ITA with other posters. Yes, children do develop at their own pace, however, based upon what you've written he wants to move and I would think his prolonged frustration is cause for concern.
I'd call the ped asap and get the EI team in to evaluate him asap.
BTW: If you stay on top of them, hand in your paperwork with a very quick turn around time, they will know you mean business and your evaluation and meeting can take place in less than 30 days.
Good luck.

Thanks ... i can see why they would implement the copay...even upwards of the $60,500 the per hour copay isn't too bad. After you get to 6 figures it starts to get up there but I wonder if private insurance would cover any PT he might need. I'm just sad that this could possibly prevent someone from getting help that they need.
But to your point, the consistant frustration that he is displaying has taken my sweet natured little boy to a more aggressive baby in terms of him having such a short temper and being a little more "rough" with me. It's hard to decipher what is as a result of him getting older versus the frustration.
About the paperwork, I'm anxious about it. I just told DH that i wish it was tomorrow already so I can get the deets and get moving. But that's me, I need everything done yesterday. Hopefully they can turn it around quickly.
Thanks again.

Some insurance companies do pay for therapies. My son received PT over the Summer while school was out several years ago and it was covered by insurance. They also cover speech and OT.

Re: Need Advice - 1 year old who still doesn't move much
Hi Lisa! I think that he will do it in his own time - he looked like he really wanted to go. And if he is started to sit up and let someone "walk" with him, it's a matter of itme.
But I will say that calling EI is a good idea. You don't need a referral. I am going through it now with Sophie's speech. I will say though that the state of NJ sucks because they make you pay based on your income. I don't think its cheap if you make a decent salary. Our insurance covers it and we just have co-pay so we use private because it's cheaper than EI. But you should call and have him evaulated. I can't remember what country you're in but each county has a different number. I think you can find it on the website or ask your ped. We made an appt and got one for about 2 weeks later, but it usually takes longer but you might get lucky- esp with it being the summer. They will come to your house and do a thorough evaulation then let you know if he qualifies. Let me know if you have any other questions. HTH!

Re: Need Advice - 1 year old who still doesn't move much
Here's a way you can help him yourself:
When he is trying to crawl and is only going backwards, put your hands against his feet so he can use your hands to push off. Then he will find himself going forewards, and eventually will do it on his own (hopefully!)!
That's how Ale learned to go forewards.....couldn't hurt to try!

thanks Meredith...we're in Morris County. I got the info on the website so I'm just waiting for them to open the office today before I call. Our hourly rate isn't "cheap" either so I will look into having our insurance cover it. So then what do I do, have the evaluation done by EI, have them recommend what the treatment should be and then find a potential therapist on my insurance plan to perform the services?

Re: Need Advice - 1 year old who still doesn't move much (UPDATE-CALLED EI)
Just reading this now but GOOD LUCK with the evaluation!
I had the same concerns with my ds and I have to tell ya, my ds went from moving backwards, to getting up onto his knees,to crawling, to cruising so fast down the hallway All within 2 weeks. When he was ready he just did. I bet this will be Matthew! But either way I think getting an evaluation is great!

Re: Need Advice - 1 year old who still doesn't move much (UPDATE-CALLED EI)
I'm glad that you called.
Honestly, from several cases that I know of children who qualified I strongly believe your DS will qualify for services. I know babies who sat up earlier than your DS and still had gross motor issues... often high muscle tone or low muscle tone.
His display of frustration really worries me. Please be on top of the team and try to fast-track the meeting/evaluation. They will do it if you push nicely. The fact that they did the paperwork over the phone tells me that they can tell a lot already. Therapist say that ideally they want to intervene before frustration manifests itself.
If I were you, I would call them today schedule the evaluation AND also schedule the meeting. You will receive services a lot faster that way, especially since so many of the necessary people involved are most likely taking vacations this time of the year. You will need to be present at the meeting, maybe your DH, the coordinator of services, the PT and any other therapists. To get that many people in one place is difficult, so I would try to not to wait until the evaluation is complete to schedule the meeting and then therapy. See if they can schedule it all now with adequate time in between to get the evals done.
Good luck. He will be fine. I've seen EI do wonders for so many kids.

Just saw this now...and I have to say you did a great thing by getting in touch with EI. They can help assess the situation and get things sorted out. I have every confidence tha that this is all going to work out well - before you know it you'll be posting how he runs around your house
