need advice - autistic child coming for Xmas
Need advice - early teen coming over for Christmas who is very severely autistic. He was just recently potty trained and he is 13.
Loud noises, chaos, etc can get him worked up, for lack of a better word. So I will try to keep things calming.
I asked his mom for some tips in order to make the visit more accommodating for him (and her), but she didn't have much to offer, just told me what to expect - he will want to look around, etc.
so, I ask you guys....any tips on how to make things more calm for him?
I was thinking of setting up a special coloring area for him as a quiet activity.
appreciate any and all advice! I just want him to be as comfortable as possible.

Re: need advice - autistic child coming for Xmas
all our friends and family know that AJ (4) needs a safe/quiet room... one where he can go to without being bothered by others.
he will have his iPad and a bag of toys that only he can play with.
my suggestion would be (if you have an extra room or place away from noise) set up an area for him only. i am sure his mom will have the comfort things he needs to relax.
relax. no one knows how is mood will be that day.

Offer a room (bedroom, den, etc..) as a back up place for them to go to/retreat.
I suggest a room with not many stuff to touch.
