Need advice.....WWYD (a little long)
I am not sure what I should do with this little situation I am in....here's the story:
We just got together with DH's family....celebrated the holidays very late b/c his mom was in the hospital for 2 months.
Anyway, it's pretty customary with his family to spend $50-$60 per child on gifts. It's just always been done that way...fine. So, I gave a list of possible ideas for DD for gifts. My SIL and BIL decided to go with our bath toy idea. No problem yet.....but here it comes....they got her some dollar store, made in China, Rub a Dub Artist in the Tub Paint kit and Foaming Body Soap.
Now I am not one to usually complain but the list of cautions on these items are ridiculous! Warning: Avoid contact with eyes and lips, excessive use or prolonged exposure may cause irritation to the skin and urinary tract. Are my in-laws NUTS?! ***!
After years of spending $$ on their child....they give us crap. And believe me they have the $ to give DD a nice gift....at least one that would be safe.
So what do I do? Let it go? Ask them where they got it so I could return it?

Honestly, I would let it go. Is this the first time they've done this? Maybe next time you can give a list of specific toys she wants.

Sorry that stinks But i'd let it go
You just never know what kind of financial situation they are in and no one would want to be put on the spot about a gift they bought.

That stinks! I would either tell them that the toys are a bit old for her so you would like to exchange them for something she can play with now or just let it go.

What's wrong with showing them the warnings and explaining to them that you don't feel comfortable with exposing your dc to any of them?
If not don't you risk them doing the same thing with any future gifts?
I agree...for future too I'd determine a set budget. We did this w/ my brother after things started getting out of hand.

Thanks for all the advice. I haven't even brought it up to DH yet.....I just wanted to make sure I wasn't being unreasonable.

Awww- that totally stinks. I totally understand how you feel.
Unfortunately, I think the best thing to do in this situation is to let it go. I think you have every right to be upset though- I would be upset too!

OMG this is my life.....we are both the last of 6 and have been giving to 13 nieces and nephews on his side and 9 on mine since, well, forever.
And DD got very little for the Holidays, and not nearly as nice as we always got for the kids.
I would let it go but definitely from now on, tone back the spending yourselves.

That stinks!! I would just let it go - if they notice that you don't have the toy out I would explain the warning. Also, maybe limit what you spend on them going forward.
