Newport, RI. We took the Ferry across and it was an hour drive from there - about 4 hours to drive back.

We loved the area and there is so much to see and do on the way home!

ETA: We stayed at the Holiday Inn Express in Middletown, but we're going back for our 1 year anniversary and we're staying at a B&B MrsPorkChop recommended - Wayside B&B Inn.

I've heard great things about Mohonk. Also Newport.

Fingerlakes region upstate is beautiful.

Have you looked to see if any of the fall cruises that go up the eastern seaboard out of NYC are running then?

It's a longer drive, but Acadia National Park in Maine is supposed to be GORGEOUS and they have hotels in the park.

I second Newport. We are going in October for our first anniversary and saying at the Francis Malbone B&B.

I second Mystic

Steamboat inn. It is right on the water, in the heart of town. They also have great specials in the fall...

Drive Rt 7 through CT (Kent), MA (Lenox) and VT (Manchester). Stay at B&Bs along the way. DH and I did this last fall as our babymoon, it was incredibly beautiful AND romantic!

Cape Cod Massachusetts
The Dan'l Webster Inn- one of the oldest B&B's on the cape with newly updated suites..

Get one of their mini suites with the beautiful canopy beds, heated HUGE bathroom with the shower that could fit 10 people in it. Jacuzzi tub and gas fireplaces in the rooms..

The food is AMAZING and it's totally affordable.

Re: need an extrememly ROMANTIC place to drive to..

We have gone to Ferry Point House in New Hampshire several times and have always had a fantastic time.

It's very relaxing, decently prices and not a bad drive. There's a lot of stuff to do up there as well - cute towns to walk through, outlets, good restaurants.....

Nantucket is so romantic.
Even though it is a summer place I believe that the fall is very popular too.

It's about a 4 hour drive to Hyannis and then a ferry ride to the island.

They have great restaurants and a tons of bed and breakfasts. FM me if you want more info!!

Congrats by the way!

We couldn't go on our real honeymoon b/c DH was in school, so we had a mini-moon at the Caesars Poconos...I don't know if romantic is the word i would use, it was fun, we had a great time...it's a little cheezy, but fun. But expensive, even though everything is included. Just a tip if you go, either do not book the room with the champagne glass jacuzzi or don't use alot of bubble bath in it. Another couple we had dinner with got this room and the wife dumped the entire bottle of bubbles they give you at check in into the glass. When her DH stepped in it was so slippery he slipped out the side of the glass and was hanging on the edge naked covered in bubbles. She had to get maintenance to come with a ladder to get him down. Chat Icon for us but nmt fo rthem!

Re: need an extrememly ROMANTIC place to drive to..

Holy Cr*p thats funny.

Danielle and I went to Cove HAven last year with another couple. I wouldnt say it is a romantic place, but it adults only. It is expensive, but includes breakfast and dinner.

The shows at night are pretty good

The hotel is from the 70's....Our first room had mold in it.....but we got upgraded to a $400 a night room with a pool, hot tub and a sauna that didnt work.

I wouldnt go there again but it was an interesting experience
