Need car key help!
My DH and I do not mean DARLING husband lost his keys last night. Not only did he lose the house keys BUtT also the keys to his car and mine!!
so now we need to get a new set for both cars and a new alarm remote for my car
We have a Ford Taurus and a Volkwagon Beetle.
Do you think its easier (cheaper) to the dealers or can we go to a locksmith??
OMG...I could kill him!!!

That is true. I have a Nissan Quest and I had to go to the dealer for a key made since it has a computer chip in the key.

Re: Need car key help!
You have to go to the dealerships that do maintenance. They really aren't that expensive.

Re: Need car key help!
They are very expensive. I needed another one for my Quest and it was $95 just for the key. That did not include the automatic open/close key pad (which is like the alarm pad).

It all depends on if there is a chip in it or not. Just cutting keys you can do at Home Depot for < $5. If there is a chip, the key costs more, then they have to cut it, then program it.
You should be able to buy the blanks on-line much cheaper, have them cut at a local hardware store, then just have the dealer program the keys.
You can usually program additional keys yourself at home, if you have two existing keys. That's what I did with my Chrysler. Now I have 4 keys programmed for the car, and I never had to go to the dealer.

Re: Need car key help!
Yes Chip keys are very expensive. I bought the remote start for our 07 endeavor and the truck doesnt have a valet key - so Mitsubishi wanted $145 for another chipped key....but my Mother in law got it for $75 from the stereo store that is doing the alarm. She had 3 cars done there already....
Hopefully he will find the keys.....Pray to St Anthony...It works

I know that it depends on having a chip. I DO have a chip in my key and it didn't cost me $200 to replace it.
How do you program your own keys???

For my Chrysler, I needed to have two programmed keys, plus the one unprogrammed key. I forget the exact sequence off-hand, but it's on the Internet. Something like putting in the 1st key, turning it on, then off two or three times until it beeps, then doing the same thing with 2nd key. After that beep, do a sequence with unprogrammed key, and that programs it. Only took about a minute per new key to program, and I saved hundreds of $$. I think each blank off the Internet was about $10, and about $1 or so at Sears to cut it.

Too cool. I never knew that could be done! I'll have to look it up for my cars and maybe make a spare! Thanks!

Ford Taurus blanks. You might be able to find them cheaper, however.
http://www.fordf150.net/howto/patskey.php How to program the Ford key.
You need two valid keys, but if you have to get one from the dealer, at least you can use this method to make a 3rd (or 4th) to keep around so this won't happen again.
ebay VW key blanks
The VWs are much harder, because they are cut on the inside, not the outside like normal keys....

Some locksmiths may be able to duplicate your keys. They just have to have the equipment for it. FM me if you want me to find out for you.
