Me too, makes we want to move to the burbs.
I was thinking black astro turf.. can you rent that or buy that for cheap? I am not even sure if thats what it is called

You can also spray paint your grass black. They make spray for grass I think- think the white lines on a soccer field... That would be way safer than a tarp!
