JMO, disregard. On the day of, he won't not baptised your son for wearing Ivory.

And, JMO, the less you tell a church the better!!

I agree 100%!! Keep the outfit if you love it and don't say anything!

they do need access to the chest and back for the oils they use in blessing. I didnt know this and we had to dig through his suit to get to him..LOL.

I have never heard of that!
I would call and ask to speak with another priest.
When I set up my DDs Baptism it was with a different priest that did the mass the day of.
Is this priest doing your DS' mass?

while I have never heard of a church requiring that the gown be pure white, not off white, it should, IMO, be white as it symbolizes the newly baptized life in Christ. When we die and have a Catholic funeral mass, the casket is also draped in a white cloth- to symbolize our baptismal promises of life with Christ.. When DS is baptized this summer he will wear white, not off white. DD also wore white.

I think wearing a family gown is probably different because it was, at one time, white.. and has turned with age- different from buying something that already looks aged but isn't.

Because the priest is "new", he probably wants to do things to the letter- I don't think it's good or bad- it's just like anyone who is "new" at something wants to follow every aspect of it.

That's a weird request all together.

DS had socks, and they did not do anything with his feet. They anoint the chest with oil, so all I did was pull down his collar a little bit. He had on a mock suit and tie that buttoned up the back. I didn't make any special provisions in his outfit to bare his chest, and it was fine with me just pulling it down a little for that part. I also don't remember them doing anything with the back? As far as the color, that's like saying your wedding dress has to be pure white...it also doesn't make total sense. I would just stick with your outfit and tell him its a family heirloom and therefore a little discolored.

gotta love the chuirch sweating the "small stuff"

as far as the exposed areas, just don't button him up all the way, the priest will just rub some oil on his chest with his finger, no big area is needed Chat Icon

eta - I did not read the whole post prior to responding Chat Icon Chat Icon ..sassy, thanks for explining the meaning.

I would not change the outfit - just tell him it was an heirloom or the godparents bought it and it cannot be changed- THE END - go worry about something else.

I know they need to be able to put oils on their chest so I just unbuttoned DS's gown when the time came - the deacon just told me to open it up and I did.

I was a godmother last month, and my godchild's outfit was an heirloom and definitely not as white as it once was, I am sure!

The other baby getting baptized that days was wearing pink! I have to admit, I was a little surprised. No comment from the priest, though. The kid got baptised!

I just had to call my uncle who happens to be a priest, and pastor of a HUGE parish in the city! He said that is ridiculous. Put white, off-white, ivory, whatever on the child. He said that this priest probably just wants what he wants, and that's why he is telling yout his. Speak to the pastor of the parish about this. It's insane! I hope to have my DC Christened using my wedding dress, which is off-white! Good luck!

Thats the craziest thing I have ever heard. We are catholic and no one said anything about the color of the outfit. DS wore ivory and it was fine.

I have never ever heard that. Id just disregard. Its definitely not a diocese rule.

never heard of the color being the issue, but for the actual baptism you need to open up the shirt and just take the shoes and socks and hat off, you can put it back on right afterwards.
