Need help with my preschooler!!

My son is extremely smart (the teachers have told us) BUT with that, comes a little attitude that when my son (who is 4.5) doesn't want to do something, he says he is tired and lays down (or sometimes says he can't, his legs are broken)......

Now, out of 3 days of school, 2 of the days the teacher told us he has complained about being tired when he didn't want to do something.

He is in UPK...how can I nip this in the butt? Any advice, tips, HELP!!! I hate that he is behaving this way.

Maybe you could tell your son that if he complains of being tired at school and isn't able to do something, then he can't do xyz- whatever he enjoys doing at home. If he is really making it up, this may stop it. You could even play into it- Oh no! If you're too tired, you won't be able to ride your bike today. You'll just have to go to bed really early.

Re: Need help with my preschooler!!

He sounds exactly like my son did at that age. I think it is a maturity issue more than anything else. I would explain to him the importance of school, how his actions are disrupting the class and having an effect on the other children, and ask him what he wants to do.

What worked for us, was an earlier bed time, and finding topics and activities that interested him. For us it is trains, cars, and legos. We were able to motivate him with legos to increase his attention span. We also did and do the elephant figure 8 head to shoulder making a figure 8 with a finger.

We also used going to places or doing something special (movie, lego discovery center, train museum, play) as motivators.

I like this idea. He is just playing the teacher because he is experimenting. He is trying excuses, so trying having them flip it around. Maybe he won't be so tired after all!

what are they asking him to do when he replies that he is too tired?

You mention he's very bright....do you think maybe he's not feeling challenged enough and is bored? I've heard of kids doing that - when they feel they are not mentally stimulated or challenged. Just something to think about.

ITA with this and I use it on my son. It works. "Mommy, but, I'm to tired". I reply with "Oh, ok, then after you do xyz, we can get ready for bed".

When you pick him up and if the teacher says he was tired, say to her (in front of him), "Oh, thanks for letting me know. Looks like a very early bed time tonight".

This is what I was thinking. DS1 used to tell us he didnt want to go to school. (3yo preschool) he was bored. Once we found a program to challenge him, he LOVES school and counts down the minutes until he can go again.

Re: Need help with my preschooler!!

thanks everyone.

I will try the whole "oh Liam said he was tired, then he'll go to bed early tonight"

I do also think he is bored. The teacher said she thinks that too. Liam told us they do baby work that should be for Aidan (his baby brother) not him. For example, yesterday they learned numbers 1-10...My son counts to 200 and already knows basic addition/subtraction. They technically can't move up from UPK to Kindergarten yet. I also think while my son academically could be in Kindergarten (he reads, writes, math, etc) socially he is on-par with his actual age....problem is he went to school at 2 years old (he was ready and soared).

we'll see. Hopefully it gets better. Thanks everyone!!
