Need info. on Girl Scouts (Daisy)..

my DD will be 5 this summer and starting K in Sept. I was reading about the Girl Scouts for her and was interested in having her join the Daisy troop. Does your child enjoy it? How often do they meet up? What do they do in terms of activities/trips? Any info/feedback is greatly appreciated! TIA

I don't live on LI and I imagine it varies a lot. I have been a leader for three years, two years with Daisies.

We met twice a month and during meetings we worked on earning petals, which go on the tunic, and then Journeys, which are a type of badge. So the activities varied based on the badge/petal. Our service unit also put on a lot of events- Father/Daughter Dance, Halloween Party, Camp-in, PJ Party, etc. We also did a couple service projects, putting flags on veteran graves and collecting newspapers for puppies being trained as guide dogs. We also march in the Memorial Day parade in our town.

My DD likes it, for the most part, and so do I. Things will vary based on where you live, though. I'd get more info from someone in your town. Even within our service unit there's a lot of variation- for example some troops only meet once a month, some troops never attend events, etc. And if she really wants to do it you might want to try and get her name on a list now- I know it can be tough where I live and if I hadn't met a mom starting a troop (who also asked if I'd help her lead) I may not have gotten DD into a troop.

My daughter started girl scouts this year. She is 6 and in first grade. She absolutely loves it. I tried to get her in last year but she was on a waiting list until September. They meet once a week for 1 1/2 hours at a school in our district. They do arts and crafts, games, and they also do the journeys book. I don't know much about the book other than that they learn about the cultures of other countries. They also have dances, shows, and events at least once a month. This really helped my daughter come out of her shell and she actually performed for a show just recently. Hope I was able to help.

I'm in a less active troop...we meet every other week for Daisies (though its Mondays and we have a lot of Mondays off so it isn't as many as it seems). They do their activities when they are there...we have a few outside activities, but not very much...our leader started as a SAHM who devoted a lot of time to the troop and now she is a WOHM and doesn't have as much time for the troop, so honestly, it is a bit scattered and disorganized...we would try to join another troop but they are very hard to find in our area. If you are in a great troop (another older one in my school is) it seems great. We just don't do much and what we do is minimal. Daisies seems to depend a lot upon who the leader is and how organized and devoted they are to the troop. A bunch of K and 1st graders need someone who is prepared in order to keep their attention.

Guess it really does depend. I'm a leader of a Daisy troop of 8girls. We Bridge to Brownies (2nd grade) this summer.

Our meeting are ONCE a month! LOL

I took over and let the girls run the troop. In 1st grade they are very keen on allowing each to have a turn, an idea, a vote. Its neat. They choose a lot of what they do. I just help by offering ideas and then letting them think of things then helping them realize whatever it is they dream up. We earned all our pedals and leaves but skipped the journeys. We did one but they just didn't care as much for that. They wanted to do other things. Our troops is focused on the be a sister to every girl scout and integrity. They are community service focused as well. So we do things together that help others. This weekend they are doing a sensitivity training session at a special theme park we have here. Its designed around special needs but is open to all. It actually earns them a patch as well.

They have tons of fun patches with my daughter leading right now with over 60 patches earned in two years. But we do camp outs, adventures, corporate patch partnership events etc. AJ's pretty active. Other girls in the troop do the horse back riding options and some the art options. I just facilitate them all. Show them what's out there and help them go as a group or help them do something on their own, its up the girls.

Love my Daisies. They are so happy with just crayons and friends! But they are building their own little tight group of girls and moms they can trust. The moms in my group are all very lay back and like minded. So its like the moms have become sisters too, to a point. We all have each others' backs. We hand off our daughters to each other, some take others home, help with projects etc.
