need my cesspool pumped
Can anyone recommend a company to drain my cesspool. It's not backing up or anything, I just think it should probably be maintained. Also, will they have to rip up my lawn?

Re: need my cesspool pumped
I can't recommend anyone. But I can tell you from a friend that they make a slice in the lawn over the cesspool, kinda like sod, and they flap it back over the cesspool.

Re: need my cesspool pumped
They won't tear up the lawn - like the PP mentioned, they will slice it and flip it over.
I will say that it is not recommended to pump the cesspool if there is nothing wrong with it. You could weaken the walls (espcially with an older system) and create bigger problems for yourself in the long run. But the cesspool person will tell you this.
They will come out to inspect the system and let you know what should be done from there.
We've used Battlin Barry's - they're in Farmingville: 736-4499

Re: need my cesspool pumped
We've been in our house 7 years and had our pools pumped 2x. IT was backing up in our lower level and we needed it done.
We have cesspools original to the house (40+ years old) and its really just a matter of time before we need to replace them. I am not waiting for that day, but it will come soon. We have cinder block type now and all new cesspools are precast rings.
We used Quality Cesspools. Nassau 516-676-7767 Suffolk 631-368-1022

Re: need my cesspool pumped
Question, how do you know when to do this and how often are you supposed to? We just moved in last month and I am trying to get everything checked out and serviced right away to avoid any problems in the future. Cesspool was one thing that I was very unsure about

This is exactly what I was wondering. I've been in my house for 3 1/2 years. I just kind of figured I should have it pumped, but I didn't realize I could cause more of a problem.

Me too. We've been in our house for 2 years and I don't know anything about this! DH & I both grew up with sewers.

A properly working cesspool system should not need to be pumped if it is working properly. When there are back-ups (like we had), the solids are not breaking down enough and the liquids are not able to seep out and be re-absorbed.
If nothing is wrong, do tempt fate. Leave it be. Be aware of where they are so you can sense if it looks like their might be a cave in, and know their age and such in case something happens.

Re: need my cesspool pumped
But could someone come out to inspect and give you an idea of what's going on (as Colleen mentioned) without pumping it?
We don't even have a house yet but I've been wondering about this myself. Our last apartment had a cesspool and it was such a pain when it had to be pumpe..I would rather have some idea of how much time is left or what needs to be done when we DO buy a house..and not have any major "surprises"

If your buying a house that has cesspools, your inspection should cover these bases and have it all in writing before you buy it. Our inspection listed the age of the pools and all other relavent info on them that we would need to know what we were getting into.
