Need some advice - confused
As I posted yesterday, I was just diagnosed with PCOS in December and started metformin a little over a week ago. I will be taking provera shortly to get AF and then will start my first cycle of clomid. The doctor did suggest that we try "naturally" the first cycle, but now I am having doubts. I know my chances increase significantly with the IUI, but what are my chances of conceiving with JUST timed intercourse? I don't know if I should push my doctor into doing the IUI...
We haven't been trying long AT ALL, but I do have PCOS and know that I do not ovulate on my own.

I don't think there is anything wrong with trying timed intercourse first. Have you had any other testing done (HSG,etc)? IUI doesn't really increase the chances of getting pg by very much. But if you feel you want to go straight to IUI, I would definitely talk that over with your doctor.

You are so helpful. Thank you for always responding to my posts!
I haven't had any other testing done. I did have the glucose test done (confirmed I was IR) and had a sono and routine blood work done at my first visit (sono revealed cysts on my ovaries).
I will definitely speak to my doctor about it. I just don't want to "waste" a clomid cycle (since it's a max of 12) with timed intercourse if there is very little chance of getting PG.

Of course! That is what this board is all about.
I would ask your dr. too about getting an HSG when your next cycle starts. I did two cycles with timed intercourse and then insisted on it. If my tubes were blocked, then there was no point in doing timed intercourse OR IUI. Thankfully, I have no blockages. You could also ask for a post-coital to make sure your CM is compatible with your DH's spermies. If you have no other issues, and you ovulate successfully, then your chances are only slightly better with IUI. Does your insurance cover IUI? I didn't want to do it right away because I have lifetime max for IF and didn't want to start using it until I had tried "naturally" a couple of times. The original plan was to do three cycles of timed intercourse but after 2 I decided I was ready to get more aggressive.

Re: Need some advice - confused
Definately ask your Dr. about having an HSG done. While it's not the most pleasant thing in the world, you don't want to waste time taking the clomid if by any chance you have blocked tubes. It's just one more thing to have peace of mind about, IMO.
As far as the IUI goes, it really does not increase your chances all that much. All it does is allowing the sperm to bypass the obsticles of getting past the cervix and into the uterus. They still have to swim to the egg.
HTH!

Re: Need some advice - confused
I think you should try one cycle of timed intercourse if the PCOS was causing you not to ovulate, but I wouldn't waste much more time than that.
Best of luck!

Re: Need some advice - confused
I also agree that an HSG is a must- You don't want to go through all of this only to find out you might have a blockage....I can only speak from my own experience but- We tried Clomid/timed BD under the advice of a Gyn for 7 months with no luck...After FINALLY getting up the courage to switch to an RE we got our BFP on our 3rd try of Clomid/IUI and have a DS...I too have PCOS...My RE said that Clomid has a tendency to dry up CM and by doing IUI it bypasses that problem...For me IUI was a piece of cake (as far as meds/monitoring etc...) We are now trying for #2 for about 7 months and unfortunately had to take the next step to IVF...Also, for us IUI was covered by insurance which helped a lot...Good luck whichever you decide..I'd be happy to answer any questions for you, being as I've done both !!!!
