Need to write a letter to my boss..

Expressing my interest in a position that has become available in our department that is a grade higher then my position now and I am not sure how to start the letter...

any suggestions?

I recently learned of an opening for (position). I would like to have the opportunity to interview for this position.

Based on the job description (or ad, whichever), I believe that I am a good fit for the position. I currently (whatever fits the new position) and believe I would be an asset to (this company) in the role of (new position)

Where I work you have to apply for the position. I would speak with them first but you might have to go through the entire process like a new candidate.

I did speak with them..but I hafta have someething written down to go in my file..
