TV is on all the time as background.

DS does not watch it unless he hears the backyardigans are on.

His actual TV time is 1 hour max per day, split up between morning and afternoon.

We rotate his activities during the day.

Re: Negative effect of TV on infants and toddlers?

my tv is on all day for background noise for me, especially when DH is not around. DD is 2 weeks old and so far not affected by it at all. I really don't feel that it will harm her at all if when she gets a little older she watches in moderation, we screen what she watches and interact with her during tv time. I would definilty not want her to watch all day but an hour or so watching an educational show is no harm in my opinion.

Re: Negative effect of TV on infants and toddlers?

I'm not buying the TV-Autism link. A quote from one of the linked sources in one of the previous posts in this thread:

Or, are we forgetting that even in the '60s and '70s, there was television on when toddlers were around?"

I never came up with a satisfactory answer. But what I did find is that even some studies looking at time spent in front of the TV back in the '90s showed more television use among young kids, before the days of Baby Einstein, than today.

I know that *I* grew up in front of the TV, and most of my friends did, too. Studies are showing that we are watching LESS TV now than a decade ago, and probably less than a few decades ago. Most images I see of the "typical" family livingroom from the 50's, 60's and 70's is the kids sitting on the floor right in front of the TV, staring blankly at the radiation-emiting CRT monitors. How can Autism rates go up if TV usage is going down, if the two are related?

I think there are alot of different things here, first I agree TV should not be used as a baby sitter but I do think it can be useful. I have never heard about that autism study reference but am confused then as to why these companies would make dvds for kids to watch...for instance my DS watches baby einstein twice aday, probably gets about an hour of tv a day between watching those two dvds. Honestly they have done wonders, he babbles to them, kicks his legs, started to smile while watching them, its as thugh he is interacting with them....in that case I say it is a good thing (although studies like this sometimes scare me)...also about background noise, I can't see the harm in having background noise because I'm not sure a baby can distinguish between the background noise of a tv or the music of a lullaby? Maybe they can but I typically leave one of the music channels on in the background while DS is in another room so he is exposed to music, heck I played him classical music when I was PG and never thought it might be bad.....all this said, I would agree too much of anything is not good but quality, educational tv or music I would think is a good thing Chat Icon

We try not to let DD watch TV for several reasons. First I have read a study that links availability of cable TV in households to the rise in Austism, I'm not saying it's right, but it is compelling.

Secondly, our TV is huge and bright and we just can't see how her brain can process it comfortably.

Third, we see a marked difference in how easily she falls asleep on days when there was no TV as opposed to days when there was.

Finally, I've read that children who watch TV, even just kid's shows and cartoons see approximately 14,000 images of death by the time they are 12.

For all of these reasons DD doesn't watch much TV at all, and neither do we anymore (we do Tivo a few favorites but that's it).

I'm not saying it's wrong, some kids do just fine with it. It's just a choice we made.

I read the same study about autism. My DH and I did a lot of research about TV and babies and we deiced for now we do not want our DS watching it. He is only 5.5 mos right now. We are going to try our best not to have him watch TV until he his 2 years old.

The TV is on all the time at our house as wellmostly as background. DD doesn't really pay attention to it unless it's a show she likes or music. Even then she will only watch for about a minute. I grew up in a TV house and read and spoke early.
