Never ending weight battle...
Seriously, it never ends. We went in today for Alexa's 1 year check up. The stats
15 lbs 12 oz 28" long Head: 17 3/4"
She only gained 4 ozs in the last 3 months. We did all have that nasty stomach virus all last week so we are going in for a re weigh in 3 weeks.
We have to fatten her up.... I'm at a total loss as what to feed her anymore. She eats like a HORSE... We are just starting dairy again so I'll see how that goes but I'm so frustrated.
Any BTDT moms with babies completely off the growth cure have any advice???
Anyone with food suggestions?
It's so ironic, I've struggled all my life with being overweight, here I have a kid that is underweight. I don't even know how to cook food that isn't lean and lowfat
ETA: She still hasn't even doubled her birthweight. She was 8.4 at birth

Re: Never ending weight battle...
Aww Maria I'm sure between reintroducing dairy and getting over that bug, she willl show a gain at your next appt. On the dairy front, Shane absolutely ADORES his YoBaby yogurts, they are made from whole milk so the extra fat and calories are in there. S has one a day, maybe Lexi will love those too??? I'm thinking cheese too.... would that be a good source of fat/calories yet still "healthy"??? Are you BF or is she on whole milk yet????

I'm still BFing but we were given the go ahead today to start whole milk. I'm going to start 2 ozs at a time to see how she tolerates it.
I'm just nervous she's still dairy sensitive and then what do I do if she can't have dairy....
I swear this kid eats more than most 5 year olds.... she's CONSTANTLY eating... why the heck is she so skinny???

Re: Never ending weight battle...
is the pediatrician concerned?
i'm sorry.
We've also been battling with weight gain since DS was born. It can be so stressful.
The pediatrician told us not to promote poor eating habits but we have been trying to offer him more meat and carbs in attempts to make DS gain weight. We balance with veggies and fruit at the end.

Re: Never ending weight battle...
I was going to suggest the yobaby yogurts as well as a bunch of dairy as well... Chels loooves organic cheddar that I get from Wild by Nature...You know we don't have the underweight problem with Chels This sounds disgusting, but I remember my mothers best friend, she had a son when I was around 8 or 9 and he was severly underweight and the Dr. would literally make her feed him mini baby cheesecakes and put a ton of butter in his oatmeal etc to fatten him up...He ended up gaining weight obviously! I mean this is a very old fashioned way of fattening them up, and we don't want to clog DD's arteries at a young age, but maybe try some sort of spin on that....

Re: Never ending weight battle...
I don't have the same issue, but some foods that DS loves:
(p.s. you know I'm not an organic gal nor do I follow all the age rules, so disregard ones that you wouldn't use)
-yogurt. Any style, any brands. I don't get the yobaby cause of cost, but he loves yogurt, especially with chunky fruits
-Peanut Butter & Jelly Sandwiches. DS will eat an entire half and we all know PB has a decent amount of fat.
-mashed potatoes
-veggie nuggets & patties (DS will eat 3 nuggets and for calories, they're kinda high)
-regular chicken nuggets (DS could eat 3)
Liam has been on whole milk for a while now (since 11 months). I think once she is off BF and offically on whole milk, you'll see a difference.

Re: Never ending weight battle...
THe ped is concerned because even though she's been off the growth curve since about 6 months she's off of HER curve now too....
SHe eats a TON, I mean A TON, Pickles has seen her eat... its RIDICULOUS how much food this kid consumes... it just goes right through her.
I'll try the yo baby yogurt.
We need to pack in the fats I guess, I'm just not sure how. I don't want to start pouring cream into stuff because that isn't healthy... but nothing is working so far

she does eat!!! She eats more than my 27lb one year old
not cream, but maybe try making her quiches with cheese and a tiny bit of cream, a tiny bit here and there won't promote such bad habits esp if she's still eating the healthy stuff that you're giving her!!!

Re: Never ending weight battle...
DD is not on the charts for her weight either. At her 1yr check up she was
28" 17lbs
Now at 18 months she is 31" 19lbs.
She is still rear facing in the infant seat! My Dr isnt worried b/c she is gaining, even if it would be a couple of ounces. And mentally, she is doing great, she is right where she should be. I just have a small little girl. The Dr did say that they would send her out for testing if she stopped gaining or started losing. But he said , even with that, 95% the results come back normal.
Also, my nephew is 3 1/2 and he only weighs 27lbs! Some kids are just little.
I hope it makes you feel better that I am in the same boat.

Not to be tmi but does she poop a lot. Maybe she just pushes the food out before she can absorb what she needs. Also what about infant hyperthyroidism?

SHe has normal bowel movements 1-2X a day, solid.
I actually asked them to throw on the full thyroid panel on her 1 year blood work because Hyperthyroidism DOES run in DH's family... so we'll see even though the ped doesn't think this is the problem since she has no other symptoms
Development wise she is perfect, right were she should be and a really really happy baby. Just a peanut!

Re: Never ending weight battle...
One thing I will tell you is that when I was a baby I had "failure to thrive" diagnosed by my ped. I was very very tiny. The doc told my mom to feed me whatever I would eat and lots of it. I ended up liking about 3 things, bologna, eggs, and hot dogs. In 1st grade I had blood tests done and it revealed v.high cholesterol(no surprise there) but I was still thin. I had to go on a low chol. diet at age 6. My entire life after age 6 I struggled with being over weight, being taken to weight watchers etc(kind of like a cruel joke, to be skinny as a baby and fat as a teenager) It wasn't until college that I finally got control of my health and started exercising/eating healthier. So all I'm saying is some kids are just small. I am only 5 ft tall and my mom is like 4'11 how big did they want me to be at age 1? As long as she is eating and not losing weight and hitting her milestones I don't understand the issue. I'm sure she has had blood work done in the past has it been normal? I say keep up the good work and pat yourself on the back for being so attentive to her needs!

Re: Never ending weight battle...
Maria does she eat oatmeal? How about using half'n'half instead of milk on that, and maybe a pat of butter or even a dollop of maple syrup? And I agree with a PP, if she is ingesting so much food, but not retaining the calories/weight could there be something going on in the GI tract???

Re: Never ending weight battle...
Some high fat healthy options are:
Avacados Dried Fruits Sunflower Seed Butter (you can get it at Trader Joes)
My nieces both had dairy issues but after they turned one and transitioned to whole milk they were fine.

Re: Never ending weight battle...
We have a lot of these issues with noah..although he is on the charts now. do you see a nutritionist? We get one for free through early intervention. She comes every like 4-6 weeks. you would 100% qualify for it...I have the phone number to call to start the process if you want?
They come and go over eating charts etc and she gives me TONS of info on extra calories etc.
I actually have a bunch of stuff from her...about how to add calories to meals etc. If you FM me ( or Facebook me a message with your address) I will copy it all for you today and get it right out to you. Let me know.
Hang in there.i know its frustrating

I agree with Colette, do the oatmeal with milk..
Make the grilled cheeses with real cheese and butter...
Oh and Christopher loves that cinnamon raisen bread with cream cheese on it...
Cheese, crackers and apples with a yogurt drink is like 4 out of 5 lunches here
Christopher isn't a big kiddo either (he almost 3 and hasn't cracked 30lbs yet)

Re: Never ending weight battle...
From what I've seen, some kids can eat and eat and just not gain weight. My DD has always been bigger and while she does eat cookies at times, she stil leats healthy and not a HUGE amount, and has always been in the 75-90%.
I agree about foods like avacados, peanut butter...
Have you also had her tested for celiac disease? I'm sue she's fine but my SIL has it and doesn't gain weight because her body doesn't absorb the nutrients.

Our nutritionist actually recomends half milk , and half half and half to add calories...
i have a lot of tips like that and reciepes for you.
