Never have and never will think I am at all important but - UPDATE
2 hours and counting for a return call from the doctor?
I understand there are other patients and he will fit me in between them but my child is having a reaction to medication and it's a concern for me....the person without a medical degree or experience...the person who brought this child into this world and is very emotional when it comes to things about him.
Sorry - just venting. The reality is that he's not in any distress so this probably can wait but it still annoys me. I feel forgotten
======================= Update
3 hours later I just got a call back. The doctor says it's not an allergic reaction...he would have welts if it were not a flat rash which is apparently common with augmentin (just now learned that that is what he is on). I have to watch Lucas and if things get worse bring him in tomorrow or Saturday
He wasn't concerned about the sleepiness (said it was a bad ear infection and the body is fighting) but I still am.
He wasn't concerned about the flat rash because it's a possibility with augmentin which is very strong.
He wasn't concerned about the bluish/purple coloring because so long as it's not his trunk (stomach/midsection or face) is just that he's more sensitive to cold or running a fever (he's not running a fever) and if warming him up makes an immediate change then he's fine.
I guess I feel better
I really owe a big thank you to all of you...you all calmed me down well before this call and the suggestions to call the pharmacist and daycare were the best
I can't wait for him to be off this stuff.

callback---say exactly that and if he cannot talk to you then you are going to the ER.. That is BS.

Re: Never have and never will think I am at all important but
If I were you I would call back...
I know my doctor sees patient after patient and then has certain times in the day where he calls patients.

I have done that too for myself. They are very helpful with drug side effects and interaction.

No, in this case I would be angry as well. Obviously, you are doing what you are supposed to (i.e. not just showing up at the office) and he is having a reaction to something, this is not just a stuffy nose.
I agree, call the pharmacist and see what they say and then I would call back the doctor and tell them you need to speak to them NOW b/c the pharmacist said xyz.
My poor Lucas

Re: Never have and never will think I am at all important but
So the pharmacist at Target is wonderful. He felt so bad that he was limited by what he could advise but he tried so hard to help.
The rash is a very possible side effect and he said that if Lucas has trouble breathing we have to get him the ER. While he said that it doesn't happen too often it's still something to keep an eye on...then he realized I was at work and Lucas is at daycare and tried to assure me that everything was fine. He said to call daycare to check on the baby. Since he already had his morning dose there's not much we can do if he isn't in distress but the doctor has to get in touch with me before the next dose.
It really was helpful but I still have to wait on the doctor to call. Guess no running out to grab lunch today.

Re: Never have and never will think I am at all important but
2 hours is a long time to sit there wondering what is going to happen to your kid next.
At my office, they have triage nurses who will call you back, so I haven't dealt with dr. I don't know what the norm is.
I hope you get your answers ASAP!

Re: Never have and never will think I am at all important but
I'm so glad you got advice from the Pharmacist. I would be upset with my doctor too. Doesn't he have a nurse to handle situations like this? Ugh....keep us posted and I hope Lucas feels better.

Re: Never have and never will think I am at all important but
I would call back - my ped calls me in less than 1 hour with non-emergencies and immediately (or gets right on) if something is more serious.

Re: Never have and never will think I am at all important but
ang-not to make you nervous...next time you talk to daycare, ask them to life Lucas's shirt and check out his stomach. That's the only way we are ever able to see if Josh is breathing okay or not.

Re: Never have and never will think I am at all important but
His next dose is tonight at bedtime.
I am actually afraid to call daycare...but I'm calling now
Spoke with the teacher...rash has calmed down quite a bit but they notice his skin gets a purplish color...like he's cold...they layer him up or hold him and he is fine. No problems breathing.
Can you see the panic in my words? I hate having to rely on other people (doctors) for their expertise...he's okay, he's okay, he's okay

Is he on amoxicillian? Maddie gets a rash from that too. Very nerve racking.

It's some form of Amox - but not straight up...there is a second name that follows it but it's also a higher dosage.

Re: Never have and never will think I am at all important but
Interesting that you wrote about being blue like he's cold. While my son was going through the same thing, daycare asked me to bring in a warmer blanket because his lips and fingers were getting blue during the day. I had them checking his breathing cause that happened to us when he had pnuemonia, but they, nor I, ever noticed any breathing issues. I sent him with a warmer blanket and that was that. But it's funny that they said the same thing at the same time, and it's something I never noticed before. Mayeb the med is lowering their body temp? Is that possible? Or it's part of the reaction.
As a side note, a lot of times my doc does notget back to me till lunch time when they have a chance to sit and go through everything--if it's not brought to them by the nurse as a possible immediate threat.

This is very helpful because we know your son was okay in the end so that makes me feel better....but strange at the same time that they experienced this...I'm going to bring it up to the doctor whenever he calls me and let you know if there is a correlation.

Re: Never have and never will think I am at all important but - UPDATE
Thanks for the update. I know it's not exactly what you want to hear cause there's nothing you can immediately do to make the situation better. But at least you know there's nothing big to worry about.
