My mom got that when she called 911 earlier.

Can you believe it?! She tried turning onto her block in her car and saw a woman laying on the street and a car almost running her over. The girl and the guy were screaming fighting at eachother... she couldn't turn onto her block so she called 911 b/c it looked bad. She gave up after three tries and by that time the couple was gone.

I could not believe 911 puts you on HOLD! Chat Icon Chat Icon

That happened to me once--I saw 2 guys attacking another guy and they put me on HOLD for a few minutes--I was SHOCKED!

do you think there is an infanant amount of people waiting for us...? there have been times i've gotten right though...and i've had to wait...

Yes I do

If they have to put people on HOLD, then they know this and need to Hire more people...simple solution IMO.

The whole point of 911 is that you are having an EMERGENCY.

Donna's right, they need to make sure they are staffed enough that a hold situation is a rarity.

You have to remember that there are only a certain # of people working at a time, if all the dispatchers are on a call, then unfortunately there is no one to pick up your call. To be put on hold is a rarity. They can't have dozens of extra people on hand to answer calls if that rarity does happen to occur. Unfortunately, just like everything else the bottom line is the almighty dollar. Who would pay for all this extra staff to be there 24/7?
I am very sorry this happened to your mom though. But I know a number of people who work for FRES and usually it not like that and they are very dilligent about doing an efficient job over there.

ETA: I am surprised though that they did not call her back. Even if the call is on hold, the number should be registered in the system and they ALWAYS call back hang ups.
Did she call on a cell phone that has the location turned off?

Well if its a rarity then they dont need to hire too many extra people and its really not that much more money?

The problem is that it is a 34/7/365 business, and they hire according to the call averages. They have no idea when there would be a higher call volume. Its not like they can hire seasonally, KWIM?
I am not saying its right to be put on hold when you call 911, I am just saying the county has restraints due to money, like everyone else.

Nassau County... she dialed 911 from her cell.

I'll have to speak with her today to see if they called her back at all.
