Never realized the amount of sugar in milk!

Maybe I'm just oblivious, but I never really thought about it.
I was looking at the nutrition facts for my Starbucks SKINNY Vanilla Latte and wondering why, when the only ingrediants were espresso, steamed milk and SUGAR FREE syrup, the carbs and sugar were like 19g a serving. Chat Icon

Then I realized. It's pretty much a shot or two of espresso and the rest of the cup is filled with steamed milk.
That's a lot of milk.

And that made me take a look at the nutrition info on milk.
I never really thought about it but lactose is a sugar.
Whole milk has 11 grams of carbs- all from sugar. (11 g of sugar)

2% and skim have 12 grams.

It adds up, especially in a latte, which is mostly milk.

I switched to almond milk in my lattes.... and to be honest, i like the taste better.

It's just crazy how if you don't pay attention, the hidden sugars etc you find lurking in seemingly innocent foods!

Totally agree - and the lower the fat content in the milk, the higher the carb/sugar count. I also use Starbucks almond milk for this reason and love it!

I just noticed this recently too. I usually order a large latte daily and have been trying to cut back because of the carbs

Try almond milk or coconut milk, No carbs or minuscule.
And the almond milk is DELICIOUS in a latte!

Yes!!!! it's crazy!
Have you ever watched What the Health? It's a total game changer the way you will look at food and dairy especially. We don't need milk as part of our daily nutrition. Milk wasn't made for humans, it's made for baby cows to drink.

Never watched it but yes, I heard that too about cow's milk.
I haven't had cow's milk in the house in years.
When DD was young she had issues with constipation so we switched her to almond milk and it helped.
Almond milk also lasted longer in the fridge without going bad in a few days... so much less waste.
And now the whole sugar thing too.
I recently bought almond/coconut milk blend- it was by accident, but man is that delicious.
Tastes like a pina colada or something!

Never realized the amount of sugar in milk!

Naturally occurring sugar, like lactose, is not bad. It’s added sugar that is the issue. Hidden sugars added to pasta sauces, peanut butter, etc.

True but if you are watching carbs it's a ton of carbs for no good reason.
I am by no means a carb Nazi but if I am going to splurge on carbs I'd rather it br something better than milk in my latte.
It all adds up

I guess it depends what your carb macro goal is. 12g of carbs to me is a drop in the bucket as I usually have over 300g of carbs daily. I’ve never really understood the mentality that carbs are “bad. They are fuel for your body just like fats and proteins.

For me, they make me put on weight when all other things are held equal. (calories, exercise etc)
I think some people's bodies can just handle carbs better than others.
i know my DH is insulin resistant and has to have a very very low number of carbs daily.
The only "diet" that he ever had any success on is the Keto diet.
I'm not that extreme, and I don't think I'm insulin resistant, but I see a huge difference in how I look and feel when I cut the carbs dramatically.
Now again, I'm do eat them and I am not overly crazy about it, but if it comes down to a gross glass of milk or another source of carbs, I'd pick the other source every time.
I just cut out the milk because to be honest, I like almond and coconut milk better and would prefer not to drink my carbs in a latte

I use cream or whole milk in my coffee for this reason- the lower the fat, the more sugar.

I also feel better when I cut carbs so I do think it depends on the person. I’ve tried to cut down to keto level lows but couldn’t sustain it for more than a week or so.

I also use whole milk in my coffee, and also a little in my oatmeal. I make it work in my WW plan.

I like milk. I still sometimes will have a glass of milk.
I just can't get into nut milks - I don't like the flavors, especially almond.
