I have been intubated a few times. You will be asleep, you won't know it was there at all other than a slight sore throat when you wake up. That's it. Don't stress over it, they know what they are doing and it keeps you safe (airway). Chat Icon

Re: new anesthesia question.. Have you ever be intubated?!

remember one thing....this is not done necessarily to have a machine breath for you but to protect your airway. i had a big surgery a few years ago and one of my first questions was if i was going to be intubated. the doc said yes and i cried every night for 2 months before the procedure out of fear! my DH didn't know what to do with me, i was never so terrified in my life! this is one of my biggest fears ever! i remember walking into the OR and shaking so bad that i could hardly walk, then getting on the table and hyperventalating. well, it was all for nothing!!! the anesthesiologist told me i won't even know when it will be put in or taken out. even if i am awake a little bit after the surgery, i still won't remember. well, i woke up and it was out, don't remember a thing and never had a sore throat. DH and I actually laughed about how scared i was. when i saw this post, i had to respond.

by the way, i work in the medical field and have seen this done a million times, patients never woke up in the middle of it....i should really have known better Chat Icon

I had an endoscopy recently and honestly did not feel a thing. I gargled with some numbing stuff, laid on the table, and was asked to bite down on a round piece of plastic. The nurse rubbed my leg, then I woke up and felt great.

I was intubated during my lung biopsy.
They didn't tell me I would be so I had no idea. When I woke up I couldn't stop coughing and I had a weird taste in my mouth for a few days though. I was fine with it. Kind of glad I didn't know what was going to happen.
