new crawler/hard floors
So my 5.5 month DS just started crawling yesterday! We are in a townhouse with a carpeted living room, but the rest of the downstairs has marble flooring. I am really nervous to let him on the floors in case he slips or falls and bangs his head/face. It's really hard...harder than wood floors, I think. Am I being neurotic?? We have an open floorplan so gates aren't an option. For now I've been turning him around...

Re: new crawler/hard floors
I'm terrified of the moment DS figures out how to crawl, i'd be fine if he skipped that milestone. We only have hardwood and no rugs.
I think I may resort to keeping him confined to playpen until I can get him to a safe place to crawl around. Maybe put a play mat in the living room during the day, etc.

Re: new crawler/hard floors
I've been giving this some thought also.....we have hardwood floors throughtout the entire upstairs and laminate flooring downstairs.
I'm doing area rugs but worry about him hurting himself. I'm also hoping he goes straight to walking.

Re: new crawler/hard floors
I did some area rugs, but there were definitely some painful tumbles (more so when he was pulling up on furniture, etc., than when he was crawling).

Re: new crawler/hard floors
I have hardwood and tile floors throughout my house with the exception of the kids rooms that are carpeted.
My kids have banged their heads more times than I can count on the floor when they were first crawling and sitting up. I have area rugs so that helps a little and you can put down the foam alphabet tiles if you want. They are not going to hit it hard enough to hurt themselves.

Re: new crawler/hard floors
We have hardwood. DD has definitely had some bumps and bruises - and I know there are more to come, but she really has never done "serious" damage to herself. Falling is just part of learning for them.

Re: new crawler/hard floors
ok, thanks! I think i'll try to keep him on the carpet for the most part for now, until he's a little steadier with crawling. The marble is really cold anyway!

Re: new crawler/hard floors
I have a huge open floor plan of tile kitchen and wood floors and both my kiddies learned to crawl on these floors (no rugs) They trip, fall but nothing permanent or hospital visits! So I wouldn't worry!

Re: new crawler/hard floors
the first couple days he crawled he basically slid around the room. lol now i just make sure if hes on the hardwood, hes in shorts so theres friction. otherwise you can tell hes concentrating really hard to not fall.
