new day care = getting sick every week??
My 15 month old just started at a Tutor Time (was previously in a home day care). He started July 10 (just 2 days a week until Sept) and has had coxsackie and 2 fevers. (last Fri he woke up with fever and today he did too).
I knew center day cares are germ central but this is nuts. Is this "normal"? He has been sick a decent amount from the other day care but I feel like this is out of control.
I have terrible anxiety whenever he is sick too so the whole sitch is really bad.
Can any other day care moms chime in here with some of their experiences/tips?

I'm actually not on Long Island (friends from LI told me about this site...).
I was thinking about switching too but who's to say the next place won't be the same/similar?
I don't know...

Hi! I also have bad anxiety when DS is sick so I can imagine how you are feeling. My DS is now 3 and has been in daycare since he was 5 months old. He's been to 3 different daycares in that time. I never noticed a spike in sickness when he started a new one. I think your DS is just having a bad run right now. I'm sorry! Hoping he feels better soon!

Any time a child enters a new environment, they are exposed to "new" germs that their bodies have not yet met (especially in daycare). The first couple of months are the roughest. It does get better.

Re: new day care = getting sick every week??
when did you bring your kids to the Dr. when they were that age? He woke up with 101.9 fever today and woke up all night crying.
I don't want to run to the dr. every time he runs a fever but at this age - is that what you are supposed to do?? My husband thinks I'm a lunatic and overreacting every time but I feel like the baby can't tell us whats wrong so we have to bring him to get checked...

When my son started at a public daycare he was sick all the time, usually with pneumonia. It was very scary.

Re: new day care = getting sick every week??
well I always take DS to the doc right away because even if it's a 24 hour bug the daycare won't let him back the next day without a doctor's note. if i didn't have to do that i would prob still go in fairly quickly because like you said the babies can't tell you what is wrong. by the way, i've been told coxsackie spreads fast in summer at the sprinkler so watch out for that (though my DS got it during winter and spring so go figure).

For a 101.9 fever and nothing more I would not take the baby to the doctor. If he was tugging on his ear, up all night screaming or not eating well, then I would probably take him in.

Re: new day care = getting sick every week??
DD started daycare at 12m, and was sick non stop. The classroom is very clean, however it's near impossible to keep germ free when the toys are being passed from one to the next. They won't send kids home unless it's a 100+ fever, or they are vomiting or have green snotty mucus. She's building her immunity, that's for sure

Re: new day care = getting sick every week??
coxackie has been running around, our center had it in June......
but two fevers ontop of that seems a bit much, summer should be the healthy season - winter is when you want to bang your head against the wall.

Whenever you start somewhere new it's new germs. It's rough in the beginning but gets better. Coxackie is running around and is common in the summer. We are at tutor time as well and I think my son has it now picked him up with a fever today and another boy in his class has it. They are really good with cleaning there but there is nothing you can do when they share toys that end up in there mouths. Hang in. It's really stressful when they are sick. It will get better.

Exactly...it's going to be the same no matter where u to. And tutor time has very strict rules and regs for sickness and cleaning so I'm sure he's in a safe clean place. My son was sick all the time.. Now knock on wood..soooo mich better..
Btw. Cocksakie is going around most of the centers this time of year. It's in ours now too.

This. If you switch again you may not be helping.
Make sure they do practice appropriate infection control (ask them). Questions I asked when I was looking at daycare: 1) What do you do to clean toys? How do you handle mouthed toys? 2) Is there sanitizer in or outside the room? 3) Use of gloves for diaper changing, feeding (solids) etc? 4) Staff in everyday clothes or scrubs? 5) no shoes or must wear booties in infant rooms? 6) hand washing for my child and staff? Must when they are self-feeding 7) Policy for when there are confirmed contagious illnesses (i.e. parent notification, step up in room cleaning, etc)?
Unfortunately, coxsackie is almost unavoidable this time of year. DS had it when he was an infant and I totally get your concern, but this is the time of year for it and its so contagious. Unfortunately kinda goes with the territory, but it will get better. Try to stay calm though. Colds, coxsackie, viruses...they are going to happen. Centers at least have a state mandated protocol for things, so better to be at a licensed center IMO.

Re: new day care = getting sick every week??
Oh yeah - my son was sick so much!
He went to daycare at 7 months and we pulled him out when he was 9 months for a 6 weeks because he was sick all the time.
We sent him back again about 6 weeks later, and he was still getting sick, but it got better. the upside is that now he is almost never ill. Its amazing!
ETA - probably doing in home daycare with new LO so that she has time to get bigger before getting sick every week.

Re: new day care = getting sick every week??
You may have just hit some bad timing with so many kids getting coxsackie. See how it goes. I think that in some classrooms there is something they do that they do not realize spreads germs but in some cases a baby gets a string of bad luck.
