New Homeowner and STAR question (ANOTHER QUESTION)
Is it true new homeowners don't need to register for STAR?? I just read this on the website:
"New homeowners applying for the Basic STAR exemption do not need to register this year."
I thought everyone needs to register? I just closed 3 days ago!
ETA...Ok, so now I have this filled out, I have no idea where to send it! It doesn't list my assessor's office. I'm in Wantagh, in the Town of Hempstead. Anyone know??

New Homeowner and STAR question
Yes -- you definitely need to apply! The quote you refer to is for the online registration -- its a one time registration via website for homeowners who have already previously applied for STAR. I moved into my home in June and tried to register online and it wouldn't let me because none of my information was in the system. Your current STAR is still filed with the previous owner's information. In addition, to register online, you need a special pin number which would have been mailed to you so that you can access the system. New homeowners were not mailed that pin. You must fill out the paperwork and mail it. The paperwork can be downloaded on-line -- its a one page application -- very quick. In addition, you'll have to include a photocopy of the picture IDs (drivers license) of anyone whose name is on the deed, and a copy of the actual deed showing that it was transferred to your name from the previous owners! The deadline is approaching rapidly -- I would try to get the application out in the mail tomorrow or Tuesday, if possible! Hope that helps!

thank you!!! now i'm worried I won't get it. my boyfriends parents had to co-sign the loan so they're on the deed, but they already have a house where they're getting star. i just emailed my lawyer to make sure we're still qualified.

New Homeowner and STAR question (ANOTHER QUESTION)
Personally, I would fill and go in person to the town. In addition to that, you can go online, get the pin number (need previous homeowners name)and file that too. I purchased this year and was told to do both by the state.

You can only get star on one house. We do not get it because we also have a parent on out house and they would lose theirs. I could never ask them to lose theirs since they helped us out.

I would fill out the application and bring it to your town in person.
